How do speeding fines affect car insurance?

Do car insurers penalise you for speeding fines - if so how much. My husband has had 3 in the last 5 years only about 1 - 5 mph over - but he has never thought to tell the insurers as has been renewing with the same company and therefore not filling in any new paperwork. Wasn't until I was going through the comparison sites (following Martin's advice on shopping around) that I thought about it. Apologies if we sound really dim!

3 points added £30 to my insurance
  • Oh dear - did you actually phone up and tell them as soon as you had the points added or did you wait for renewal.

It happened to coincide at same time so the £30 was for the year....... But in effect you have no insurance if you dont declare it at time........
  • Oh gosh - so if we had an accident they wouldn't cover us. We have been really silly over this. Just never linked speeding fines with motor offences!

I would phone to declare them before I drove again, sods law and all that :o
  • You should let an insurer know about changes in cirumstances. Not doing so can lead to rejection to a claim ;)
  • Have been having a really good read up about this on the internet and summary of it all is - yes insurance will go up and as he has 6 points - this might be by about 100 - but advice is make sure you declare so as policy is not invalid and then use the internet to shop around. And, as in my husbands case, as it was only a couple of mph over the speed limit each time, some may take that in to consideration - should think so to - hardly boy racer material!!

Amazing what you learn on this site, now you can read other bits and save money on other things to cover the cost of extra insurance :D
  • Husband phoned insurance company this morning - Direct Line - and they charged him an extra 203.00 and put his excess up from 100.00 to 500.00 and they weren't interested in the fact that it was only a few mph over. He has an excellent driving record with no claims. Sorry, but I think these charges are a rip off and are exploiting the difficult situation the country is already in with the speed camera fines. I do agree with being penalised for speeding but to be charged as a high risk driver for going 3 or 4 miles over a speed limit is unfair. Yes I know he did it 3 times in 5 years but as I said it was only a few mph on each occasion. Will be spending rest of this morning going through Martin's 4 Step Plan to Cutting Car Insurance!!
