ooh i cant decide whether to buy my husband one for christmas. it sounds right up his street, he likes to browse from the sofa, loves playing games, watching films (do you have to buy them from itunes or can you watch your own on them?) etc.

I know he would love it, just a bit worried - what sorts of upgrades are they going to bring out? I dont care about thinness, weight etc. but camera/usb would be a welcome addition.

I adore my iPhone and wouldnt be without it so Im thinking iPad will be similar for him.
  • i think an iphone or HTC is fie and then get a laptop

my friend has a iphone then his company gave him a ipad and a imac air thing (what ever that thin thing is) he leaves teh ipad at home and users it as a coaster. he cannot see the need for it its not a lap top and its not a phone he thinks its just a random thing that no one needs but think they need

see my husband doesnt use the word processing/excel type bit of the laptop, hence why a netbook or its trendy counter part the ipad would be ideal for him.
  • Can anyone explain to me

the actual use of an ipad

To pose in a coffee shop window?
  • You can now get VLC for the iPad - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vlc-media-player/id390885556?mt=8

So you can watch your own media and movies (e.g. DivX files) from the comfort of your lap

It's an expensive gadget.. but hey, my SLR cost the same price as one of them, would you mock me for using it? After all, i could 'do the same thing with a compact'

I want convinced when I tried one in the apple shop, but since a client sent me one, I love it and the laptop is semi redundant.

I've been looking for something like the iPad, mainly for the near instant on access to the internet. I've had loads of play with the iPad but am not convinced it suits me.

For something the size of the iPad I may as well carry around my Linux 10" Netbook, especially with the need for a proper keyboard. For me I think the Dell Streak @ 5" is too small and the Samsung Tab with a 7" screen is a better compromise if I had to lose the keyboard.

  • It's probably my luddite, anti-fad attitude toward new technology but I think it's worth waiting a few months - promising new tablets are emerging which will hopefully drive down the price of the iPad as well as further encourage Apple to make improvements on their tablet. The new 10.1" Advent tab might be worth looking into, although I'm not really sure if it's even on sale yet.
