Ooh I love making clothes! Don't do it so much these days as 'ordinary' (ie non-special occasion) clothes are cheap - and charity shops are such good value too! I used to do it a lot though, but I never really learned the essentials of pattern-making. I either just used a commercial pattern and changed it a bit, or I just wrapped the fabric around myself and then made something up! So learning how to do it properly would be good.

Bitsy I want to learn to crochet too - this lady is my inspiration. Busy knitting little things at the moment though.

Inspiration for the day is here

Oooohh I'd be interested in that too. I got a sewing machine for Christmas as well although I still haven't got it in London yet. As am off to Uganda next week better count me in for the second group :D

Just went shopping today for all the bits and pieces. It's amazing what a girl can spend on toiletries! You'd think there was no soap in Uganda the stash of stuff I have bought. Also some nice treats like new knicks and socks, and a pair of trousers. They need taking up though and my new sewing machine is still in N. Ireland!! Could do with you and your overlocker on loan MG :)

Hello!! I'd love to learn pattern making too!! Do you make the pattern from scratch MG or can you adapt a pattern? I've got a fab looking prima dress pattern but I 'know' that if I make one of the standard sizes it won't fit!!

With a master pattern that fits you it is really easy to "overlay the two patterns and make adjustments - its also really easy to look at a piece of clothing and then make up your own pattern.

Trust me - clothing construction (not high end tailoring mind) is a pretty simple "sew a straightish line" process.

DS1 is learning how to make his own pajamas today - so if a ten year old can make a pair of jammies from scratch, theres hops for us all :D

PS - he does want the candy coloured flanelette dyed though:D

Yeah - my little boys are big on texture. Got two kingsize flanelette sheets at a car boot - still in the original 1960's John Lewis wrapper.

Cost me £2.00 - and there is enough fabric to make 2 pairs of pajamas for me, 3 for DS1 and 5 in gradualling increasing size for DS2.

Bought 2 m of interfacing for £2 and the buttons come from old shirts and grannies button box.

10 pairs of jammies for £4.00 - which will do the kids and I through the next two years of cold seasons.

Tempted to find some cotton-poly to do them some summer shorties as well now that the pattern is out.:D

PS will do some internet research re your pattern idea later today as its raining so no outside gardening to do today

  • Morning one and all. :D

At work, and really want to be tucked up in bed asleep. No rest for the wicked though. Have a heavy day of work (none of which I particularly want to do) and then I intend to go swimming again (I went last night and really enjoyed it!) and then home for housework and cooking and clearing up.

Have a good day all! I shall be keeping my eye on the thread today...! :D Glad to see MG with some of her voom back again. Perhaps it is va-voom now... moving slowly upwards to va-va-va-voom! :)

Sweetie you are a skinny little slip of a thing compared to "Ruby Venezuela" - the most rubenesque of Drag Queens ever. Mind you he was a lot shorter than you so it was heavy on the boning time otherwise he looked like a billiard ball :rotfl:

Not that I'm saying you look like a drag queen - but with some sequins, some glitter, 3 pairs of false eyelashes and a "suprise pink" follow-spot we can all give it a go :D We could all channel our "inner diva"

Although it pains me to admit it - this is one time when size really doesn't matter!!!! Your basic pattern fits - YOU, whether you are a 5ft tall size zero or a 6ft tall size 20. Same basic principles.

I need to chat with a techie bod about automatically drafting patterns - so this will take some research. Mrs Big has said that if you can get 100 peeps to say "that's a good idea, I'd buy that" then you are on to a good start.

Been clearing the garden today - three loads of ivy to the skip. So I'm off to share a bubble bath with DS2 before he gets too big to share his "Timmy-time" bath bubbles with me.

    Hi

I haven't been 'active' on either this forum or the other side for quite a while but gradually weaning myself back, although when I go back to the other side I am a bit concerned on where to start catching up! It's about 6-8 weeks since I have been there and feel like I have let myself down by not even lurking.

Anyhoo, please include me in the 'I think that's a good idea - count me in!'

I am still working my through your book but not got the discipline to sit and work my way through it completely. I need to sit and concentrate but have too many other things and distractions that interfere! I will get there one day!

It's good to see you back MG, please remember to take it easy and take them baby steps.

Another one for the the "yes please to patterns" camp! Not been brave enough to attempt clothes on my sewing machine yet, even though I have bought fabric to make a simple dress.
