There are a few people who I would ask for a "wish list" from and if people ask I will give them mine. Personally I would rather have a cheap gift of something that I like than an expensive one I loathe (and that has happened).
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

No, no, no I would never give someone a list of what I would like. To me it is the height of bad manners. If pushed when someone asks I will try and come up with a suggestion, but I don't really like to ask for things. Maybe I just have people who know me well and always give me something that I like.

  • If someone asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I'm sure I could provide a list. And when people do ask me - like Mum or whoever - I always try to give a couple of options that are different prices so that they can choose what suits their budget.

I don't ask my friends what they want for Christmas because I like to choose something or make something that is personal to them.

I think it's incredibly rude just to send out a list without being asked though.

I think the main point is that the list wasn't asked for by family/friends who had no idea what to buy...it was sent out on the assumption that everyone would want to buy the sender a gift.

I would find that quite presumptuous!

Lists are for children under the age of 12 for Santa. Nothing wrong with writing a few ideas down to help relatives choose...but it's polite to wait until you are asked first :D

We always do lists because our family ask for them to make their lives easier. Because of our varied and occasionally obscure hobbies and interests our family have told us it is very stressful for them to try and figure out what to buy and specifically request lists from us.

We have tried not to, but the year we did it resulted in two very upset and frustrated mothers and they're of an age when they really shouldn't have to get so wound up.

I'd rather have some surprises but never mind...at least there's not stuff lurking at the back of cupboards never used or appreciated.

My wish list is purely for my husbands benefit and is stuck on the side of the fridge/freezer as a response to 'I never know what to buy you'..... Anything on it will be happily accepted. :)

We do lists as a family but i would never send it to someone. My Mum just uses it for suggestions if the family ask. I do like surprises but also nice to get some stuff i want or need.

OH makes a Christmas list each year for himself and circulates it round his relatives. I think it's the sign of a spoilt child (which he quite freely admits he was and still is), but I also really hate the idea of lists as I think it takes all of the fun and surprise out of Christmas. I really enjoy coming up with ideas for things to buy my friends and family - and seeing if I get it right or not each year! I also like to be surprised on the day with at least some of my presents.

That said, OH's family actively ask him for a gift list (and one for me, but I don't participate in list writing!) and he ends up with stuff he wants and I end up with a lot of rubbish from his side.

We have amazon wish lists in this house. DH, DS and I all have our own, with prices ranging from £3 upwards (for DS)Items from other online stores are now added to it via amazon universal wishlist. Our nearest and dearest know about them, and if anyone asks me what DS would like for his birthday party next month then I'll direct them to it.

Edited to say I'd rather have a book costing £7 that I really want, rather than someone spending £30 upwards on designer perfume etc.
