All joking aside from my previous post (which was a joke by the way). We went on holiday this year and got our lad worked up about being on the plane and how exiting it was going to be. We got on and sat down, trying to be last on so we didnt have as long to wait. It scared him to start with so he started crying as most 4 year olds do. The 2 people sat in from turned round and asked us in very sarcastic tones whether he was going to do that all the way through the flight and then proceeded to complain to the cabin crew to be moved seats. As it happens he had calmed down by the time we reached the runway as I had a bag of stuff for him to do and he had a great time on the flight. But I was pretty upset by the reaction of them.

I can see both sides of the situation here. If I was you I would have been annoyed at their reaction, your son has the right to fly as much as they do.

Had I been them, I would have been bothered and annoyed by the noise and it spoiling my flight.

    Its a hard one.
  • "A liking for being around children" has a slightly suspect sound to it.
"Liking having children around" would be less likely to get you locked up.

I was thinking that earlier. Men nowadays are terrified to walk past a school! I'd hate to be a man. You can be accused of so much, when doing so little.

i think more surprising than some people's wish to not always be around children 24/7 is the attitude of many towards those who choose not to have children. here's a particularly vicious and nasty attack from that old favourite the wail. women who a willingly childless apparently lack "essential humanity" and are "weird". well that's nice.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1185128/Why-bosses-right-distrust-women-dont-want-children--VERY-outspoken-mother-ex-boss.html

We feel desperately sorry for those who yearn for children they cannot have; the unwilling barren, if you will. But when we meet a woman who chooses her childlessness in the belief that there is something out there worth more, we smile politely even while - once again - our guts whisper: 'Lady, you're weird.'

    How long was the flight?

I can highly reccomend Bose noise cancelling earphones, not cheap at £300 but well worth it to keep your sanity.

My friend was terribly embarrassed on our flight home from Greece a few years ago. Her 3 yr old daughter had the most horrid tantrum when told that she had to put her seat belt on and screeched during the whole landing procedure. There were plenty of folk tutting and moaning about "badly behaved kids" etc etc. (including her husband ) but personally, I'd rather listen to a screaming kid on a plane than a load of half-cut chavs on their way to a hen weekend!

People would not have been around to post here if our parents were decided against giving birth to us :D
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Maybe it is just me, but I would not take a four year old on a medium haul flight unless it was in some sort of emergency. Holiday at home untill they are old enough to appreciate the travel and are in a position to behave themselves and not disturb others.

but the parents don't do it for the children. they do it cos it's what they want to do themselves.

Oh and I hate that "it takes a village to raise a child" line... when did anyone ask the village if it was up for a spot of child raising?

As a teacher you are already doing your bit of child raising.

If you happen to be some child's favourite teacher they are going to sing your praises for the rest of their lives.
It's yet another fobbing off of parental responsibility onto everyone else.
Actually in places where they have extended family any parent who allows their child to run around the supermarket, annoy other adults etc would be chastised.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
