It just astonishes me that somehow it is OK to express a sweeping prejudice against a huge percentage of the members of our society - would it be OK to post a poll saying 'Do you like being around people of a certain skin colour' or 'do you like being around people of a certain sexuality' or people with a certain disability, or whatever. Children are people too, and they deserve to be treated and discussed with respect.

I like children, generally, like you all say I think it depends on the parents. The children of the parents I know are all polite and well behaved. There's something nice about the innocence and unreseveredness (if that's a word) of them, lack of self awareness, quite happy to say what they think sort of thing.

Hans Christian Anderson summed it up perfectly.

I like being around my children. Not sure about other peoples. Depends if they are screaming little terrors or not.

Most people have no problem with children in general, just badly behaved ones.
  • I can't stand children full stop, they bore the hell out of me and I do my best to avoid them at all costs.
Does'nt help when the parents of these little lovelies won't take charge and keep them under control when in public.

But children are people too - so when you take age out of the equation, what you are saying is 'Most people have no problem with other people in general, just badly behaved ones'. Can you honestly say that all adults behave appropriately at all times in public places, and you have never been annoyed by rude or inconsiderate behaviour by another adult?
  • I'm on this earth for one reason only, to enjoy life and get the best out of this one time experience. Children don't factor into that equation. As an "assumed" step father for the last 6 years, my view still hasn't changed however I manage to work around it (somehow).

99% of the times I encounter children are -

    1) Them chattering at classical concerts after being brought along by stupid/indulgent parents.
    2) Them kicking the back of me seat on planes
    3) Them screaming in a tantrum in supermarkets
    4) Them kicking a ball up my wall for hours
    5) Them listening to banging tunes on public transport without earphones

Basic lack of discipline from the parents/schools. I'm sure in other places/times they are fine.

Difference is that nobody feels the need to defend badly behaved adults.
