I'm on a capped tarrif with Scottish Power.

Since i joined them the tarrif price has dropped. Now with this new tarrif what does the 'capped mean' ??

Does this newly announced price hike mean that my 'capped' tarrif will revert to what it was when i joined them or is the price drop protected too?

Yes, it way well go up again. (possibly even higher that it ever was if the cap allows this)

The cap was set at the start of the contract; it doesn't change over the term of the contract.

  • Is this change to the prompt payment discount something to do with Ofgem? I recall reading something saying there were investigating things like this. If so its yet another bungled effort on thier part. Gas sculpting fail Consumer Focus secured a much higher refund than Ofgem agreed under its 'investigation'.

Recent (ish) change NPower made to online prices apparently to comply with an Ofgem rule. Ofgem stating the condition was meant to tackle the difference between prepayment prices and normal prices. If this was the case then it should've been phrased so that companies couldn't exploit this loophole.

If this last one is them again what exactly are they playing at? They're costing customers money which surely is the opposite of what they are supposed to be doing.

This is largely the result of a prompt payment discount reduction from £150 to just £60 (electric was £50, now £20; gas was £100, now just £40).
Is this yet another way of them attempting to drive people to pay by direct debit and penalise anyone who tries to pay their bills any other way?

Can anyone shed any light on what this might mean for people who are on one of these plans?
If you’re currently on one of the following products your deal will shortly be coming to an end but you don’t need to worry. We will write to you about this by 30th November 2010 with details of a new deal we have developed especially for you.

I can't find any details of the new tariff for Online Energy 10. Energyhelpline is still quoting the current prices and Scottish Power leads you through a structure that only confirms a price increase but doesn't tell you what it is.
  • Thanks for being a ScottishPower customer. We hope you've enjoyed managing your energy account online and benefited from all our available services.

Your current Online Energy Saver 7 Offer is due to end on 30th November 2010. As a valued online customer, we're happy to offer you an extension to your discounted offer, so you can keep saving and continue to benefit from our award-winning online energy service2.

Enjoy discounted prices for another 12 months
With our extended Online Energy Saver 7 (Dec 2011) Offer, you would continue to benefit from a minimum 3% discount on our standard monthly Direct Debit prices until 30th November 20111, helping you pay less for your energy. These Offer prices effective on 1st December 2010 are detailed here. All the energy companies have got sneaky, adding exit fees to normal (non-fixed rate) online deals. Does anyone know if you can exit without penalty because they are putting the prices up, or have they covered that base in their T&Cs? I know switching may not necessarily save much on the tariff, but an extra cashback generally doesn't go amiss and makes it worthwhile.

I dont know in your case but for me I asked the question ( by email so its in writing ) about my tariff (online energy reward) and whether it would rise and if so whether I could exit without penalty.

I was actually told it does not increase with these changes ( but I will keep an eye on it anyway and hold them to their word )

  • scottish power still has two products that can stop you being hit with a price rise at all..they have a capped price which caps rates from ..march.2010. this runs till dec 2012..so dont get hit with any rise on standing charge or unit rates..if rates drop by any miracle yours do too..you get dual and dd bonus aswell as online too..:T.
  • The rate son the capped products are even higher - as you'd expect - and would be an amazing 25% hike over my current uncapped tariff. Shan't be doing that.
