Totally true, never ignore a letter from a Train company that is threatening prosecution with an alleged bylaw infringement, as like stigy states you will end up in a magistrate's court.

You only have three options;
1. Pay up
2. Appeal
3. Contest

IMHO I think the time to 'appeal' has passed.

'Pay up' not a bad option as it's now cheaper and you could ask the Train company if you could pay over a set amount of time.

'Contest' write them a letter saying you wish to contest this in a magistrate's court, I'm sure other posters will help with reasons, but you are calling their bluff, as will it be cost effective to take you to court for such a small amount and for a trivial matter. But understand this you are running the risk, if you take this stance, that you will end up in court.

Because there staff phone through and check the address etc. If they don't believe you live there they are likely to call the police. Seen this several times with regards penalty fares.

Because thats a very silly thing to do and can lead to a bigger punishment. It may be a victimless crime but its still a crime.

couple of years ago when i found out my girl friend was seeing another bloke i gave his name and address to the revenue bloke.

wouldnt use his name again as apparently the train companys put a mark next to that name.

Another one that needs to think before they type. Most people are generally honest enough to give correct details, and if they don't, decent staff can usually see straight through them and ask clever questions.

not the serial fare dodger who knows once the revenue bloke has got a valid name and address he is limited in what other questions he can ask under caution.


just for the record im not a serial fare dodger i just used an opportunity when my season ticket had ran out to get some revenge on a bloke who i fort was a friend.

If the name and address check out, it's a bit more difficult. It's when they're giving you an address and stuttering when they give the address that alarm bells start to ring!

I find generally speaking, that most people give correct details, which is nice. The chav type people usually give correct details too, because a) I already know their name and address off by heart, and/or b) they really don't care about a potential addition to their criminal record.

OK............ but I do remember from some of you past threads that you get the majority of your rail tickets from Ebay, then bend the terms and conditions to suit.

Anyway back to the more important issue, OP are you back yet and have you decided on what to do?

i bend the terms and conditions not break them so im not a fare dodger.

i just feel that dazz has been hard done by. the walter mitty that reported him was very heavy handed and should have just asked him to put the ciggy out but no reporting him gave walter his daily kicks.
