That's a nice thing to do! You'll have made their day! Do you also tip hairdressers or delivery drivers? How about postmen at Christmas? How about bin collectors?

I just think we're rather arbitary about who we 'should' tip, and who we shouldn't. Why not tip a traffic warden? I'll bet you have a discussion with one who you meet ticketing your car, and hey, he's just doing his job much like a waitress.

My point is that when the service you receive from someone (no matter what the occupation) is good then if you are handing over money to them anyway then a tip is a nice way of showing you appreciate the service you have received. When I get my haircut if i am happy with the service i receive i will tip the hairdresser, the same with takeaway deliveries etc. I don't tip all the time as sometimes the service is poor. You're traffic warden argument is so weak i can't be bothered debating it. Bin men i admit I don't tip and thinking about it perhaps I should but the postman always gets a Christmas tip, i thought that was pretty standard?

In my experience people who come up with arguments like "they get minimum wage so don't need a tip" are just using this as an excuse to hide behind the fact they are too mean to tip properly.

I have to agree with Janey partly anyway - The Tee side and Durham branches have appalling service from their staff and are very rude HOWEVER, The Metrocentre branch has really polite lovely staff and although its the same menu as the other branches, the food tasted so much better there as well!

Oh No - The Teesside Park, Middlesbrough branch was great when we went, was it a recent visit as it is a while since our last one? - we asked if our girls could share a set kiddies menu meal as they were only 3 and split the ice-cream / baby cappucino into two but they brought them one full one each.

I ordered a chicken salad but they had ran out of chicken, asked them to just put anything on as it was actually the olives I liked and they put loads of different things in it and then only charged me half price for the inconvenience - I didn't even ask them to do this!

I hope they haven't gone off the boil :-(

FWIW, I do tip when service has been exceptional (as opposed to just average), but I object to the expectation which appears to be pretty arbitrary.

There are many roles and jobs that do not expect tips yet are paid lowly. Should you tip a nurse? How about a policeman? Ambulance driver? The AA man? How about a street sweeper? Why is it decided that we should add 10-15% of the bill to give to someone who is paid to give you a pizza instead of doing your recycling?

Accordingly I don't think the TW example is really that 'weak' - just because the service they're providing at minimum wage isn't in your favour, they may still be providing the service well. So let's go for the nurse example instead.

Pizza Express are an okay joint. Don't quite understand the vouchers nonsense, though - spend thousands of pounds in Tesco and they give you twenty quid off your pizzas - how generous.

Nurses do a fantastic job and are obviously underpaid. However when you are in hospital there is no financial transaction that goes on between you and a nurse. Therefore to just hand them money when you leave is very uncouth and can possibly be seen as insulting to the nurse, people don't become nurses for money they become nurses as they want to help people. The last time I was in hospital I received very good care from the nursing staff and on leaving the hospital I sent a card and a gift for nurses on the ward. I believe this is an appropriate way of saying thankyou for the care you receive.

From your posts I get the impression you waltz through life not rewarding people who provide you good service and just hide behind the fact that these people are just doing a job and get paid a wage and that should be it. Thats fair enough I suppose but personally I wouldn't like to live like that.

I don't tip because society says I gotta. I tip when somebody deserves a tip. When somebody really puts forth an effort, they deserve a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, that s**t's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doin' their job ... [W]orking at McDonald's [is a tough job], but you don't feel the need to tip them. They're servin ya food, you should tip em. But no, society says tip these guys over here, but not those guys over there. That's bulls**t.

£100 spend at Tescos = £2 in Tesco Points = £6 in Pizza Express vouchers.

So spend £1000 and get £60 in Pizza Express vouchers.

    Yeah ... I don't think that's the way people think when they're shopping at Tesco though;

"Best spend that £1000 on groceries so I can get out to Pizza Express this weekend!"

Ha ha! Not really the way loyalty schemes work!

You don't think that one of the reasons that people shop at Tescos, say rather than Adsa, is because of clubcard points?

Do you want to tell Mr Tesco he has got it wrong!?
