I don't mean to sound stupid but in Oz we say Self Raising Flour or Plain Flour could someone please let me know what all purpose flour is as I have a baking book that has some good recipies that I would love to try and no one I know knows what all purpose means. Thanks0

Mid-prep. for a Green Tomato Cake. I'm suddenly beset by uncertainty concerning the above(250gms).
It's from an American site, allrecipes.com.
Hoping for quick help in order to continue - the other dry ingredients are 400gms sugar, spices and baking soda.
Will be very grateful for reply - want to trial it tonight and repeat for gift tomorrow.

Oooh, according to this thread American cooking terms, all purpose flour is SR.

Thankyou all - I hadn't thought twice about it and was about to measure out plain flour, then hesitated, wondering if overponders would consider s/r the more 'all-purpose' of the two.
Mentioned the bicarb. as it has raising properties, too.

i have this problem too, a lot of the recipes i use are from an us website. Every time i am mid bake i have this panic and have to google it. N ow i have written ALL PURPOSE on the lid of my plain four pot and never have to think about it again!0
