I don't have any sympathy to be honest. If they'd have just gone back and got the search over with, they could have carried on with their day. Instead, they caused unnecessary stress to themselves, wasted police time and made themselves even more late for work.

Her carer was the one that was stopped, not the disabled girl, so why was she arrested and detained. If they had not been together she would have been able to walk away, just like the other 8 people who walked through the security gate at the same time.

On the other hand, I once saw them call the police to arrest a disabled girl, (who was so scared she was throwing up and hyperventilating), because her carer refused to go back to the store and be searched as they was late for work. They were stopped as the security alarm went off, but about 10 people were all passing through at the same time so it could have been anyone.

Police showed up, arrested them both, searched them and found nothing. Tesco then refused to apologise and banned them from the store.

Their security seem to believe that they are above the law.

Poor lass but the carer was being an !!!. It would have only took five minutes if that rather than the few hours they lost though the carer being difficult.

The security staff have a right to stop if they reason to believe someone is a thief disabled or not. Alarm do off occupational and its necessary to for some minor inconvenience to the odd customer to reduce our shopping costs.

It is unfortunate that she was detained, but just because the carer was with a disabled person I don't think it should be ignored. Besides, from your wording it sounds as if the disabled girl was accused, not the carer. I doubt the disabled girl would have been allowed to wander off if the carer had been accused anyway.

It's an extremely awkward situation and Im quite surprised they didn't let it go to be honest, but I don't think they're necessarily wrong in taking the actions they did.

There have been quite a lot of topics on here relating to dodgy supermarket security but from what I remember every single one of them has been because the person has refused a search and attempted to leave. One I remember had even stolen something and still thought the security were in the wrong. I've never had any problems with store security but then again Im always cooperative.
  • Would be nice for once if the security in Tesco stopped following my man around just because he resembles a "man mountain". Yes he's tall, and usually badly dressed - but we're in there a few times every week and it's really gettting old and stopped being amusing laughing at their bad surveilence attempts.

I saw a scrawny chav in Asda trying to nick a bottle of cheapo wine not too long ago, the security man and his mate were the man mountains this time hehe...said chav was dragged back with what looked like a broken nose, he wasn't looking or feeling too clever.

He had another 14 year old mate stood outside waiting for him, I told him his friend might be a while :D

Injured whilst saving someone's trinket*? I'd say that was more stupid than committed. ;)

I would love to see your face if someone nicked your phone and when you reported it was told "its only a trinket, it would be stupid trying to save it.".

I was told exactly that by the Met Police when someone mugged me for my phone. I hung onto it instinctively, and he ran off, but I ended up with a broken wrist where I fell. Police said "we know who did it, but we can't prove it, here's the reference number if you need it and don't ever ever be so stupid again as to hang onto it. It can be replaced."

To be fair, I agreed with them, it was just instinct to hang on. At least I had the phone to call myself the police as no one else bothered to stop and help a young woman on a busy London street at 6.30pm...

Banned from the store? Most people in that situation would never do custom with such a store again.
