Praise for the security guard and staff in Tesco.

I nipped into Tesco to return something earlier and just as we walked in there was this bloke as what i'd describe as a 'Man Mountain', he was huge and I certainly wouldn't have messed with him. He was surrounded by a young lad in a security uniform and about half a dozen members of staff. All of a sudden this bloke pushed one of the staff out of the way and started legging it nearly knocking my wife over. The security guard and the staff members chased after him.

A few minutes later 4 of the staff members came wandering back in looking knackered but said they'd got the phone back and managed to pin the bloke down until the police turned up. A couple of minutes after that the security lad came back in being pushed in a wheelchair after taking a few knocks from the thief.

I take my hat off to those people for being so commited to stopping the theif that one of them clearly got hurt.

It also livened but what would have normally been a boring wait to return something :D

Injured whilst saving someone's trinket*? I'd say that was more stupid than committed. ;)

It's a shame more people aren't as *stupid* then rather than just sitting back and letting things happen.

I think what FN meant was it is foolhardy to get involved in a fight that could cause serious injury to a member of staff or the public in order to retain goods and that an employer would surely (and almost definitely) has employment contract clauses prohibiting such action.
i.e. NEVER, EVER put yourself at risk to stop a thief.
I admire the sentiments you have given though, and yes, too many people will stand idly by whilst theives etc do what they like, but there is a limit to what anyone should risk and that employee obviously went well beyond it.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

On the other hand, I once saw them call the police to arrest a disabled girl, (who was so scared she was throwing up and hyperventilating), because her carer refused to go back to the store and be searched as they was late for work. They were stopped as the security alarm went off, but about 10 people were all passing through at the same time so it could have been anyone.

Police showed up, arrested them both, searched them and found nothing. Tesco then refused to apologise and banned them from the store.

Their security seem to believe that they are above the law.

Normally security are feeble old men or young thick fat skinhead geezers who think they're Police (but on minimum wage) - well that's how it is in our local Tesco !!
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

How do you know they are on minimum wage?

All the security staff, and all the staff, at our local Tesco are on more than the minimum wage.

It was the only bit I know to be totally incorrect throughout Tesco, your local security may be old etc but the ones round us aren't.

I don't have any sympathy to be honest. If they'd have just gone back and got the search over with, they could have carried on with their day. Instead, they caused unnecessary stress to themselves, wasted police time and made themselves even more late for work.
