Mate its nothing to do with being self/employed its your credit file which is just not good enough which means you failed their credit score,as you've said the bank has lent you 2k because they know your history.

My credit with Experian and Equifax both show as "good", presumably that means it's fine?

My bank have little history apart from a few small payments, I've made in there over the years. 95% of my wages are cash in hand, so I rarely use banks.

So experian and equifax have told you your credit rating is good, thats coming from a credit agency that do not lend money.

Mate a lot of people come on here and think that being self/employed was the reason they have been turned down for credit, but the real reason is they failed the credit card companies credit scoring.

Well I don't know, I don't normally apply for credit - all I'm saying is, they both say "good" and only on experian there is one defaulted payment showing for a loan which was about 6-7 years ago and the only reason I didn't pay that was because I moved house and totally forgot about it.

The reason I thought it was being self employed that is the problem, is because I was in Currys last xmas and decided to buy a tv on credit, but it was refused - the guy told me it was likely because I was self employed *shrugs*

Ignore shop assistants when they try and explain why you have been turned down because they have no clue.

I've been self/employed for 10 years last year got a £2800 television and a £989 Imac on credit, the reason was is my file is clean and had a few years of managing bank and credit card accounts.

Defaults fall off your report after 6 years. So it was either less than 6 years ago or it's not been removed as it should have been. Which is it? If it's less than 6 years then you have 2 defaults on your file...one for a loan and the other for a credit card. Worse, they're several years apart so you can't even claim it was a 'blip'. Doesn't look good to a prospective lender does it?

Anyway, you need to ignore the poor/fair/good/excellent/superdupa/fantastic/wow ratings and scores the CRAs sell you.

    What's the factual data like?
    Is it accurate?
    Any financial associations listed?
    Any CIFAS markers?
On Electoral Roll? (currently and for last 3-6 years)
    How many credit accounts?
    How much available credit?
    How much used credit?

I've been self employed all my working life (around 22 years) I was given tonnes of credit in the beginning, all of which was payed off (although not all that is on file?) and I have a mortgage (which is nearly payed off) but find it strange I can't walk into a shop/shop online with a good credit rating.

Nevertheless I've been pre-approved with my bank for 2k, they are apparently phoning tommorow. I'll wait and see what happens!

Ah I see, the only thing I can think of is the house was newly built around 1.5 years ago and I wasn't on the electoral register until about a year ago but would have thought that would be okay by now?

Looking at my file the default is 6 years 3 months ago, so due to come off I guess. All other data looks intact.
