Super post, Amilucky. Social networking sites are about the most popular target out there for hackers which is why I'd never join one. The Register's online tech reports are so repeatedly full of news about the latest vulnerability exploits as to become, well, predictable.

I had this today, I've not used MSE for quite a long time, bar the odd browse.
• Me too.......
• I got the email this afternoon. My site name bears no resemblance to my email address.
I just read it and then deleted it as I had already received my weekly email. I am not very good with techie things, so I am now quite worried.
• This is ABSOLUTELY coming from the database on this forum.

I own my own domain name, call it MYDOMAINNAME.COM

For all websites I have a unique email addess. I also use a variety of user names on forums.

The email was addressed to:

MSEForum@mydomainname.com and addressed to MarmiteMayhem

Absolutely no way on earth a spam bot would get this.

This is a definiate issue for Martins gang.

i got this one too, thought it looked odd/wasn't interested so deleted it. so glad i did now could so easily have clicked on the link
mine was also address to my forum name ( which i only use on here)which also has no similarity to the email addy i use
thanks for all the updated info on here though
• I just received it - sent within the last 30 minutes (according to the headers - and I've been on-line throughout the day so would have seen it sooner had it been sent earlier).

My username has nothing to do with my email address, and the latter part of my email address is not a common one, so it's definitely not a case of appending hotmail/gmail/whatever to usernames.

I doubt it has anything to do with the July 09 problem. It seems bizarre that someone should have gained details of MSE members over a year ago and not done anything with them before now - that, and reports from members who've joined the site as recently as August 2010, point to a more recent data breach.
• ive not had one ! but sadly the penis people seem to have targeted me too today . . . . .

I have no idea why sites like the one below are allowed to operate as they are an invasion of privacy and I also wonder if what they do is legal?

I personally don't think that the present emails have anything to do with MSE being hacked but are due to Spambots gleaning information from various social networking sites

Your theory isn't supported by any of the evidence. For example - my MSE username is completely different to my username on any other site, and I received this email a short time ago. Entering my MSE username into the site you suggested found nothing related to my MSE username except my posts on MSE. I am on various other social networking sites - and there are users on some of those called "blueberrypie" - but none of those has anything to do with me.
