Does anybody know, when the Usernames & Email addresses were "harvested" last year (I take it they mean stolen), were Passwords stolen too?

I can't be the only (stupid) person who uses similar passwords on MSE and on other websites.

I've changed a few of them already in the light of this breach :o

Yes I got one today, luckily my virus protection kicked in, and warned me before I opened it.

You know this is happening on hotmail addresses - I receive very awkward emails from friends and relatives, probably those who have me on their contact list

Correct. This is a way that some viruses / trojans propogate by harvesting email addresses from a local users address book or just searching your hard disk for any email addresses contained in any files.

It *could* have happened in this case, one of the MSE Web admins had a copy of the database on their system or a text file with a dump of the database but, looking at the content of the email, this seems to be a targetted distribution as we know the emails were harvested from MSE and the actual content of the email is financially related - too much of a co-incidence for me.

As an aside, it would seem that the moneyexpert company is actually a real company so they may well be innocent in all of this as well? It was just to get people to download the trojan (and the words used in the email are a cut and paste from the moneyexperts website.).

I have 2 user names on MSE. One has not been actively used since I changed to the new one in around 2009.

The old (pre-2009) user name has had the email whilst the new user name has not. Perhaps this helps to narrow down when the breach occurred.
