To update and also to thank both closed and trevor, it was indeed the monitor!!!! :jI managed to borrow one and all was fine , good and dandy, am so,so,so happy am backing up to ensure that I lose nothing or ever feel that worry again. Think though that it only nopw a matter of time before the hard drive goes can't believe that the monitor went befoer my ancient relic!

Thank you so much for the help and advice given you really are wonderful. And if either of you lived local I would say :beer: on me.

p.s any tips on increasing ram?

What is your commit charge, and peak commit charge from task manager/performance?

have backed up onto gig sticks some important bits am tomorow commiting myself to backing up photos on to cds the rest of the bits to be fair am not to worried about though if I can get to them before the computer packs up great.

As for commit charge if I am looking at the right thing it says total 400464 limit 640028 peak 427540.
peak commit can't see that have cpu usage a 0% (am using laptop to write back, I don't want to use the computer much at the min feel a little on edge, just want to get all back up done first) and Pf usage at 390mb.

Is this okay or do you need the other bits? Did you notice anything on the hijack this log? Looks like loads is going on to me!

what is the physical memory total from the same screen?

You'd be better off using an external hard disk, and dvd's for backup, but anything is better than nothing.

It's a long log, looking at it, but need the commit and ram figures first.

At the min I am going to use the resourses I have to hand at the weekend thought about an external monitor am just a little worried so thought cds would do.

thought it was a long log though I didn't think I had that much going on! Was suprised to see msn there as I removed that the other week?!?! Should I be worried though I won't be if I save my bits first!

reset ie to defaults under tools, internet options advanced

replace mse with avast 5 free, do a full updated malwarebytes scan and fix anything found before closing

run startuplite, and ccleaner

you have some symantec stuff on there, have you had norton at some point, if so, run the norton removal tool

uninstall google toolbar unless you really want it.

turn off microsoft error reporting, control panel, system, advanced, error reporting, select disable error reporting and but notify me when a critical error occurs

CD's are ok, just don't hold as much as dvd's (assuming it has a dvd writer), long term an external usb hard disk is the fastest way to backup and can be used to backup the laptop too (using disk imaging software), but also use CD's or DVD's as a secondary copy for important data
