Please I hope someone can help!

I should never the other day posted asking for advice on a new computer I think mine heard and has now decided not to work!

When I turn my computer on it changes between a black and white screen (like a normal start up) but with no text eventually it ends as a white screen where I would normally click on the user (if that makes sense), this white/grey screen is completely blank, I am also unable to open in safe mode as I press f8 and again a blank screen.

Please someone throw some light on this is you can. Many thanks for reading.

  • Many people cannot access Safe Mode as they use an incorrect technique - You need to rapidly & repeatedly tap the F8 key during boot up.

If this doesn't work - verify that the monitor cable is clamped tightly to the graphics card SVGA output (blue clamp / socket).

Some additional information would be rather useful in order to provide assistance - Computer make / Model, Specifications and Operating System as a starting point.

  • Thank you so much Trevor for the reply, I have been hitting f8 repeatadly from start up but to no avail, (I have just tried again, again nothing) everything is connected, it was working properly last night, well as good as it has been! I am not to sure whether this is of any use but I was infected with rabnet and augreaon(sp) which I did managed to clear eventually. (or so I thought/think!)

The computer is a parkard bell iextreme running on xp serivice pack 3 I know that it has 512mb the rest I am not to sure but will dig out the paperwork in a min. I know it is old but I would love to see it working if only to salvage documents and photos. Thanks again for taking the time to read.
  • Just in case this helps further computer is a packard bell 6093 with intel pentium 4 2.8ghz, 512 ram, 80 gb hard drive.

The disk and data is probably fine, put into another machine or hard disk caddy, and you should have access to the data - but the experience should push you into doing multiple backups in future.

Does the bios screen come up when you boot, ie any text before starting windows?

  • Thank you closed for your reply, I know I should of backed up more often I did recently do a mini one for updating to service pack 3 but remembered that there wasn't a problem with service pack 2 so took a risk, hindsight!!!!! (am using daughters laptop and in light of have backed up, the irony!!!!)

When I start up there is absolutely no text at all. I am having to shut down by pressing and holding the on button.

Wonder whether would be worth my time connecting to a t.v as a monitor to see whether it is a monitor problem though I think I am clutching at straws.

have you tried unplugging at the wall?

    has it been moved recently?

worth a try, you've checked the vga lead at both ends already? (remove at both ends and check for bent pins)

Does the machine make any beeps?

  • I have tried unplugging from the wall, again nothing, it hasn't been moved recently was only using it last night! It is definately connected ok!

As for bleeps the tower bit (now you are going to see how techo I am not!) lights up and makes it buzz noise as it would normally, the green light showing on is on and the amber light flashes as it normally would if that makes sense.

Think tomorrow the plan is to try to rig it up to the t.v but am gonna have to work that one out!

  • st999 nothing at all a total blank screen, flits between black and white as if starting all blank then settles on a white/grey. in my mind when it is doing this it as if starting normally then stopping when it comes up with the users, hope that makes sense.

closed both ends are good removed checked and replaced.

I am so hating the bl***y thing. Have been quoted £50 for virus rem1oval, not too sure until they see if they can how much for recovering photos etc, I think right now sledge hammer and to hell with the rest
