White Screen On Start Up

You don't need to pay anything for virus removal, advice on how to do that is free here, and a £5 usb caddy will get your data back if you don't have another pc to stick the hard disk in.
If nothing comes on screen, no bios, it's not virus related.
Try a different monitor, if the video card is not on the motherboard make sure it hasn't come out of the socket, unplug any external items, mouse, printers, usb sticks, memory cards, empty dvd drive, etc and try again!!

Will definately try t.v tomorrow and let you know how I get on (please fingers crossed), maybe a bit of a silly question but how do I know where the video card is. I guess at the min and by what you are saying it is hopeful that it is a monitor problem?!?! I do hope so. Will let you know how I get on with t.v as monitor, would you know is it easy to set up? Thank you again0

it's the thing where the monitor is plugged in, have a look inside, it will either be on the main board, or a daughter board.
If the lead is fine, unlikely to be the monitor based on what you've said sofar, more likely to be the graphics card, or motherboard.
first method of diagnosis is to remove everything external, and if still no joy, start unplugging things internally (dvd drive, hard disk etc), still no joy, remove bios battery.
What happened before this problem started?
could you elaborate on "like a normal start up", because a black/white screen is not normal, there is no text or writing or graphics or cursor coming on screen at any point?!!

closed this is where I can get so far then am going to be so stuck! I can remove all external but internal bits, tell me you live local!and the aeugreaoun
To be honest computer was running lovely until about a month ago when got infected with the rabnit thing oh and a zgen and augeoun(sp). managed to rid of those and seemed fine until today, last night was online and using works shut down as normal. This morning I start it up straight away blank screen,(flitting between black and white) no text no writing no nothing. when I say normal start up I mean the sounds and the way the lights on the tower light up, the black and white screen flickering resonates with the normal start up, if you know what I mean, so for me I would have purple for the packard bell, into black then user screen now the black and white.0 -

Plug the laptop into the screen to make sure the screen and lead is ok, you may have to hit a function key and possible an fn key to toggle the external monitor output if you can't see anything straight away!!

I'm back! Thanks you trevor and closed again for your replies, have hit another stumbling block and would love thoughts on this! Firstly I removed all external bits and nothing changed so tried to link up to laptop nothing then with my t.v (samsung) but it didn't/couldn't support the harddrive (nor maybe did my lovely old computer as it did beep and beep and beep!) so came back to trying again with the laptop. Then I thought ohhh what if the brightness etc has been messed with obviously this would explain the blank screen (promise I am not blonde it just was that simple I hadn't thought of it!) but when I try to adjust I see nothing on the screen, so I am now thinking monitor. I have set this up again with the laptop, in display settings I have my monitor as the 2nd (and have put to extend my desktop onto this monitor and think I mirrored),yet when I click identify I still have the blank screen, so I am thinking that this is a monitor problem, but I would like the know how on checking that the laptops graphic card supports additional monitors it does have a VGA which I am using and the laptops apperance has changed since I added the other, am I going about this the right way before I consider dismanteling?
Your thoughts please, thank you0 -
is it a crt or flat screen/lcd monitor, and what size is it?
use the buttons on the monitor to set it to factory defaults, and make sure brightness/contrast is medium.
changing monitor shouldn't make the base unit beep, was everything plugged in, keyboard/mouse etc?
Are there any function keys on the laptop that look like they have a monitor logo, the laptop bios screen should show up on the monitor before windows boots, you may need to press Fn + F??? to switch between internal/external/simultaneous output, depending on laptop model - see manual if unsure!!

Thank you closed the computer monitor is a flat screen don't think lcd but is a flat screen! I am not able to change anything about it when I press the buttons I still see a blank screen which is why I am now thinking monitor.
It beeped when I had it connected to the t.v, t.v off then turned the base unit and t.v on, before that the t.v said it could not support it.
I am going to shut down and restart and let you know the findings.
Thanks again0 -
Closed I couldn't see anything, maybe I missed something? However, the computer monitor responded with closing down and with re starting, I now have found someone who tomorrow evening is going to lend me a monitor to see if that is the problem.
I have other t.vs (well the kids do!) that will work as monitors but I think that by just using a computer monitor might help especially where I am not too techno minded! Though as is apparent I have the support of you guys (blows kisses!)
I have answered one of my own questions though and that is that yes this laptop does indeed support another monitor.
I guess lets see what tomorrow brings, thank you so very much will keep you posted0
