Today I will be haggling...any tips

Hello All,

Today I will hopefully be buying a car, it’s a Clio from a Renault dealer. It’s currently at £4,695, with a full service and MOT. I am hoping to get him down a few hundred quid at least. I’ve printed off some other used cars which are the same off Auto Trader that are cheaper to use as bargaining power (good idea?). But I was wondering what tact I should take...I’m also in the process of buying my first house, shall I play the sympathy card?

Any suggestions will be very welcome.

Statistically women get less discount on cars than men.

No such thing as sympathy in the motor trade!

just go in and say you've got £4k to spend and let them see what they can do from there. you won't get £700 off, but you might get something - 12 months tax, full tank of fuel (which can be £60 these days) but more importantly check the warranty to see what it excludes, rather than includes.....

Edited for accuracy. The motor trade is still stuck in the 70's when it comes to women.

Just offer your best price and walk away if they will not play with you.

I bet they will soon get back to you.

There will be some area for negotiation, but would you give the best part of 20% discount in something you have a 10-20% profit margin in, and still have to give the customer the full legal protection of the sale of goods act.

You might, as stated, be able to get bits and bobs, mudflaps, longer warranty, though with used car why bother, maybe even a fresh MOT.

But to be honest you may get a couple of hundred, if you go in at £4250 then you might end up at £4500, which isn't a bad saving.

Kick them in the nuts with the first offer. Someone who only offers a few hundred quid less will be easy to beat into submission.

Negotiation technique training would teach you that you must never be the first one to name a price ....if you as a buyer go in with £x then you have set the low point, and the only way is up.

Likewise if the dealer mentions £x first then he has set the high point and he can only come down.

He will almost certainly have had this drilled into him as part of his sales training, which is why he will repeatedly ask you to make him an offer. Stand your ground, don't name a price and keep replying "what's the very best you can do ..?"

Once he names a price, then you go in lower and start the real haggle.

Bear in mind you will pay more with a dealer than a private seller in the Auto Trader, every time!
