I run another forum, and we're always posting up and telling our members to be careful.
One guy in one weekend told us what he was doing the next week, the mods in his car, where he worked and lived, etc.
We always caution people to be careful choosing usernames, and not display licence numbers, details, phone numbers etc in posts, especially as we do meet up several times and have a buy/sell section.
It does annoy me though, no matter how careful I am, there are tagged photos of me from family members on the internet. I'd prefer there not to be, but some people seem to have no idea on basic security.0 -
Just for curiousity, I wonder how many 100s/1000s emails that will be sent to MSE people, sent to their personal email address, but addressed to their MSE 'name' i.e Edinburghlass, fermi, Murphy_The_Cat.
After the first few hundred/thousand, you'd get the distinct impression that they have been originally sourced from MSE somewhere/somehow.0 -
Morning All
I've had one of these emails today as well, addressed to tiredanddesperate.
I haven't clicked the link (but only because I was distracted). I thought it was from MSE
I'm just about to delete it.

Yes, I'm juggling and I might drop some.... but at least I'm trying

It happened to me.
Can i just say i have had first hand experience of how easy it is to track a person from scant information given on websites, the odd comment here and there soon adds up and its FRIGHTENINGLY easy for anyone with very little computer knowledge to track you down. A town where you live and a few random comments, eg, your occupation (no matter how vague) and a passing remark that you walk past tesco/asda/any random shop on your way to work, or how old your kids are and you walk past on the way to school, or any random info about yourself, eg you go to a local gym, oh, please be careful what you post, people, on THIS or any other site may not be who they say. Take heed!! Its not just about photographs of yourself and your family.Theoretically there is a perfect possibility of happiness: believing in the indestructible element in oneself and not striving towards it0 -
I've also received an email that greets me with my MSE forums user name, 'tartmaster.simon'.
Given that my email address is not visible on the MSE site, either these people have somehow stolen the username to email address mappings or MSE have shared it without my permission.
Either way, it's bad and I'd like to hear Martin's take on it.0 -

I've not had any dodgy emails, but the privacy issue is a concern. One reason why I'd never post pics, or give out my real name.0
