Underpaid Postage

Last year we had to drag all the way out to the sorting office (10 mile round trip for us) to collect & pay for an underpaid item - expected it to be from DH's mother who lobs money into an envelope for the grandchildren's presents but frequently forgets the stamps - DH was not impressed to find it was a card from one of my old aunties!
Told Little Sis in time to stop her trailing the 14 mile round trip .... wish there was some way of indicating what the item is & where it's from to help make these decisions!I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
September last year I had to pay £1.10 as I had a card through my post box and it was a birthday card for me from my sister,I told her and she paid it me back at xmas when she came to stay. She hadnt got the card weighed and it had large embelishments on the card and she had just put a 1st class stamp on which wasnt enough.0

you didnt have to go
you can pay online or with stamps
dealing with charges is time consuming enough without sitting writing little descriptions on every card. my old office gets around 500 a day0 -
I too have experienced this. I got a card through my door from Royal Mail. I went to the delivery office, only to find I had to pay £1.10 for a letter from my savings bank.
But it tuns out they had put the envelope through the frank machine backwords. They had paid for the postage after all.
The frank was on the back of the envelope and the guy at the counter said I should complain to RM but he had to take the money.
I could not be bothered writing or complaining. I have to say that RM now seem more "relaxed" about underpaid postage in the last year or so.
Overall they do a great job in my opinion. If I could get let go from my job, - the first thing I would do would be to apply to the Royal Mail! I think our posties do a brilliant job0 -
Well he been doing it for about 20 years and is near retirement so.....
and in recent years things have changed greatly(funny how folks dont seem to get this)
for years the charges weren't controlled
now the charges that go to a DO are counted
a DO has to account for the charges it holds and the money it takes
any charges they dont hold and dont hold the money for are treated as theft.
eg RM hasnt been paid.
many RM staff have been caught for doing stuff they thought was doing a favour for folks.
I know of someone who got a serious conduct code for unofficially holding mail for someone
be great to get sacked before retirement to save somebody else a charge on their mail, wouldnt it?
would you risk your job in the same way?0 -

If the charge was £1.10 then it was nothing to do with the franking. The £1 is the handling fee and the 10p underpaid postage, since there is no 10p postage the payment can only represent the difference between the postage the machine read and the actual postage.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Now you say that, I may have been wrong when I said £1.10. Maybe it was £1.50 or £1.41. I cannot remember exactly what I had to pay.
The point I was making was the RM staff member at the delivery office told me the yellow sticker being applied (the charge) was not correct as postage had been paid by the sender after all. He still had to take the money and told me to complain to head office.0
