Won item yesterday, but it "must have been sold in the shop"

Hello all, I won an auction for a women's leather motorbike jacket yesterday for (imo) a good price. I paid straightaway (with paypal). Today I get an email saying:

"Hi, we've had to issue you a complete refund for this item as for some reason
we no longer have the Jacket in Stock. One of the sales people must have
sold it in the shop & forgotten to adjust the Ebay stock. Please accept our
apologise."

OK !!!!!! happens, but I was pleased to have won this auction for a good price. Should I give them a negative?

    Yup. It's a fabrication.

Totally agree with MacFly they probably didn't get the price they wanted. If you get a request for a mutual cancellation tick the box to refuse it (don't ignore it as after 10 days if you don't respond fees are refunded). That means they won't get their fees refunded.
  • The money has already been refunded to my paypal account.

I got a pair of bike jeans from them last week too for a great price and got great service (ie next day delivery). Do you think that they didn't want me getting another bargain? lol

  • Don't give them a neg. Maybe a neutral. But mistakes can happen - you haven't lost out.

Mistakes do happen, but people are wary of this trick. It depends whether you believe them or not, but I'd be disappointed. However, if they honoured another low price, then it might be a bit cynical to say they are definitely telling porkies.

    It's up to you.

Sounds like this is a business selling biker gear. At the very least they should have given you a future discount on another similar item. I got caught out by ebay's relisting facility. Seems to have changed now, but a multiple item relist listed the original number, not the ones left, so I oversold.
A quick explanation and offer of a similar item at a reduced price was willingly accepted.

Most items like this that I have seen have a note on the listing stating, 'this item is available for sale in other locations and may be removed.........' etc. Did this listing state that? At least then you would have known there was a risk of not getting the item. Though having said that, I often think that sellers put this on their listing as a get out clause if they do not get the price they were wanting (cynic... me?)

  • Neutral for me. They've been honest and decent about it. Keep it factual.
  • Thanks for all of your advice guys. Think i'm going to give them a Neutral.
