Can I Claim JSA??

Hi there,

I apologise if this has been answered before but I couldn't find it,

I am currently working for an Agency, in a factory about 30 miles from where I live, so I do roughly 60 miles a day just to get to work,

My wife and I have a 7 week old baby, and she is currently on Maternity Leave, my question/dilemma is... I can't afford to keep running my car to get to work and it looks like it'll have to be taken off the road when the tax runs out (end of Nov), so I'm currently looking for a job closer to home, but is this a good enough reason for leaving the job and if so could I claim JSA while out of work??

Any help on this matter is a great help

Thanks in advance

You can't make yourself unemployed and then get JSA (unless you have a really good reason and a DM in a good mood). I'd start looking around for jobs now, even if it's a crappy job it can tide you over until you find a better one.
  • I'm already looking, obviously I don't want to be unemployed, I have a wife and baby to provide for, but if I can't find a job before the end of the month, where do I stand?

In the Job centre, though you will be sanctioned (ie no benefit) for up to 26 weeks. You can claim hardship at £40 a week while your sanction runs.

Impossible to answer without a complete breakdown of all your incomings and outgoings.

But, yes, theoretically it could constitute Just Cause
  • 30 miles to work is not much of a distance - I think you're very likely to get a sanction if you make yourself unemployed.

it's a massive distance if you can't afford the travel costs.

Buy a little scooter, its not much fun in the bad weather but believe me its cheap, about £75 insurance,£15 tax and around 80/100 mpg.
