I find it insulting to be told to 'man up and pay for it' since the government and taxpayers are not paying a thing towards the cost of our daughter

Apart from child benefit and possibly child tax credits.

  • No we are not recieving any tax credits and the child benefit has not yet come through yet. I would also note that it will be contribution JSA that i would recieve (if any) which you can ONLY get if you have made enough NI contributions from working. (Contribution based JSA is in fact your own money returned to you as are tax credits it is a refund on tax you have already paid) If you recieve incme assessed JSA then this is a benefit (I WILL NOT GET THIS). This is why contribution based JSA can only be paid for 18 weeks. So before you assume people are claiming a benefit perhaps you should be clear on what a benefit actually is.

I am only interested in comments from people who have useful advice and am not going to be justifying my possition any further this is an ADVICE forum not an opportunity for moaning.

Hi. If you're earning NMW and your wife isn't working, you will qualify for tax credits. These in-work benefits are intended exactly to support people in your situation who want to work, so you should put in a claim straightaway.

I still think the scooter idea could be the thing that gets you out of an immediate hole. You could carry on at work - and as your case seems to be somewhat of a grey area, you wouldn't be risking a benefits office decision that you'd intentionally made yourself jobless. You could either apply for jobs nearer to home, save for a new car once the tax credits have come through, or both.

    Hope this helps.

I think you'll find the SMP is paid by the employer and not the tax payer.

People are perfectly well aware of how the benefit system works, which you obviously are not. NICs are not some private savings scheme which you can draw on when you want to, they pay the benefits of those who are not working while you are. If you should claim JSA in the future the money will come from those who are earning at the time.

If you are on NMW and your partner isn't working you will be eligible for tax credits (which are benefits, by the way). If you can claim JSA (CB) it will be paid for 26 weeks, not 18, and after that you would be eligible for JSA(IB) unless you have savings or your wife is working.

I think that's corrected all the misinformation you've posted but I have to add that you will almost certainly be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks if you choose to leave a job voluntarily just because you think 30 miles is too long a commute.
  • Hi JipMeg

Just wanted to let you know a couple of things from my own experience. I used to be a benefit processor (JSA) for the DWP (my contract ended a few weeks ago).

During my employment I processed several claims where the customer had needed to leave a previous job because they could not afford to travel to that job any more. I can only tell you that from our point of view (that is in the benefit delivery centre as opposed to the Jobcentre), we did not see this as an issue. Whether or not the Jobcentre may impose a sanction, I cannot say. I don't believe you would be expected to travel 30 miles each way by public transport, but I would imagine that would be looked at on an individual basis by your Personal Adviser.

Anyway, I sympathise with your situation and hope you find something else soon. I'm 34 and have never had to claim before either, but I had to start signing on last week. Am hoping it's not for too long, especially as the person I spoke to when signing spoke to me in a very aggressive tone- almost like a piece of rubbish - quite unnecessarily really as I am doing over and above my Jobseeker's agreement (why would I not - I don't want to be on the dole!), and am only out of work because
our contracts were not extended (Thanks Mr Cameron :) )...

Hope my perspective helps a little anyway, I wish you all the best.
When you're going through hell, keep going...

I was told I had to travel one hour and it didn't matter how far that took me - it would take me about 6 miles or so.

It wouldn't take that much longer to walk 6 miles!

OP, Ignore some of the Richard Heads on here giving some shocking advice and doing little but argueing with each other..

Get in touch with the Job Centre people or whoever arranges JSA and ask the question explaining fully your reasons.

If they say no youre not entitled to it the you have your answer...same as if they say yes...

either way it'll be from the horses mouth so to speak.

One day some company will do what they say they will do and charge a fair charge.:T

Not doing the opposite of that which they promise and charge you a fortune for the privileged. :(

    Or maybe not:mad:
