"Available balance" is the amount you can spend and equals your cleared balance plus your overdraft limit less any uncleared debits already marked against your account (like uncleared debit card transactions).

    Actually MarkyD

A&L has a curious and highly annoying "system" where the "cleared balance" shows uncleared transactions as cleared. this precipitated my kick off on monday.

I wrote a cheque on the understanding that finance my dad deposited at bracnh up north had cleared. they bounced the payment saying that the payment hadnt cleared. I said its showing as cleared.

reponse "oh no its not, it wont clear till wednesday" Im like why show it as cleared then.

She started "its your responsibility to maintain your own budgeting!"

I went spare, !!!!!! do you think im doing thats why i took your account as its internet banking.

She refunded me half the charge.

As an aside I ordered a new card on the 27th- it was FINALLY delivered today. What a crock of muppets.

They seem to have it in for you lynz lol - is the new PIN being sent to you separately in another envelope - hence not arrived yet?

Another quick (maybe stupid) query - if you need to give the address of the bank your account is set up at for direct debits and so on, but the account was set up online, what address do you give?!

Lynz - I've had pin trouble with the debit card; called them and they sent me a new 'phone' pin number, not card pin number. What complicates it is that I've also got a credit card with them which also seems not to work. In consequence, I'm only using the account with cheques now. Other than that, I'm glad I kept my Lloyds account, instead of transferring.

me tpoo chesky- I think the lloyds ones OK, im switching back ,or getting a second account with smile.

The amount of pins and numbers from A&L  your having a mess! they never accept my phone pin, ever.

I just feel Ive had nothing but grief from them this week. The difficulty is that we are due to exchange on the flat and move out asap, now I need my debit card to book the van/ do shopping/ and im dreading being between addresses!

2 weeks to send out a replacement card seriously takes the pee as well

Just out of interest, how did you determine from online banking that the payment had cleared? Are you saying that the credit was reflected in your available balance?

I was about to ask the same question. A&L don't use the expression "cleared balance" - they say "available balance".

When a cheque clears with A&L is shown in your cheque book, but you have to add on the time it takes for the cheque to reach their processing centre (one working day, if you bank it at a branch).

It will normally show on your account the day after you deposit it at a branch (i.e. when it reaches the processing centre) and then be available for spending on the third working day thereafter.

e.g. pay in cheque at branch on Monday
    reaches processing centre on Tuesday
    available on Friday
