drontal making dog sick

I gave my dog Jack his Drontal worming tablet today but he was sick shortly afterwards. Obviously the tablet would not have been absorbed so he will need worming again.
He was ok last time I used the Drontal - looked a bit sick but didn't actually vomit.
I'd like to try something equally effective that won't make him sick as there's no point giving him Drontal again.
Has anyone had good results with any other wormer that doesn't require starvation before administration?

The last time I used Drontal, it made one of my dogs sick - he'd never been sick with it before.
After that, I bought something called Plerion from a reputable site on the internet (can't just remember which one it was, but it was a well-known one), which was ok, but very messy to try to get down them, as it's like a very solid pate, and they were quite resistant to having it.
I'm going to the vet's with Oliver - the dog who was sick - on Tuesday, about something else; worming time is looming again, so I'm going to ask the vet's advice.
What I really need is something small, so I can chuck it down their throats, that won't have them throwing up!0 -
Thanks meerkat. I usually hide the tablet in bread or cheese...or I've heard you can get granules which would be easier to get down the dog.
Hope your Oliver is ok at the vet's on Tuesday.0 -

Thanks, zaksmum. Oliver's a skinny dog at the best of times, but he seemed to be losing some weight, so he's going back for an official weigh-in. I suspect, knowing Oliver, that it's been because he's been very picky over his food, and since I changed back to the previous brand, it may be wishful thinking on my part, but I think he's put some back on. :T
I can use the "hiding" trick with Henry, but Oliver just will not fall for it. I asked the vet for any "professional secrets" on how I could get tablets into Oliver, so he showed me: open his mouth and put the tablet as far back down the throat as possible!
Well, it works with Oliver - Henry, on the other hand, nearly has my fingers if I try that with him! :eek:0 -
How old is Oliver, meerkat? I had that with my old dog and it's desperately worrying when they won't eat or are losing weight, isn't it?
With my old dog, he wasn't eating but seemed to be piling the weight on. People would comment he was getting really fat but I knew he wasn't eating enough to keep a bird alive, poor thing.
They give us some grey hairs for sure.0 -

Don't they just! Oliver's 14, and a very sprightly 14 at that! He's a mini long-haired dachshund. When I let him in from the back garden, he jumps up the step into the living room, then waits, looking back over his shoulder at me, and when he sees that I'm going in the same direction, he takes off like a bat out of hell to beat me into the front room.
I'm aware that the losing weight and not eating much could be a symptom of something serious (he is insured, by the way), but I suspect it has rather more of the "I'm not eating those minging dog biscuits while you're eating fish/chicken/whatever" about it  He very kindly relieved me of a piece of haddock earlier on, and was like a rat up a drainpipe to swoop on the piece that Henry dropped! He wolfs down his treats as well.
I just swapped them back onto Arden Grange, which is a nice small kibble - Oliver has lost quite a lot of teeth over the years, which may be why he wasn't too keen on the last good quality food we tried, until I started adding hot water to it, and even then he got picky about it. He sleeps well, is happy and lively when awake, and if I jangle the car keys at him, he's out of the front door like a shot - if I forget to open the two doors beforehand, so he can hurtle out like a small furry missile, he makes a racket like a stranded seal, as if I'm dancing all over his toes!0 -

We went to the vet's as planned tonight; the vet gave Oliver a good going over after he weighed him. Oliver has put a little weight back on, but just to make sure, when he goes back for his booster in December, the vet's going to weigh him again.
However, the good news is, in the vet's opinion, there's no reason why Oliver, like Henry, shouldn't make 20 :j - they're both 14 now.0 -

Oh wow...that's brilliant news meerkat!
I'm so pleased Oliver's ok - I was starting to worry about him myself!
Give him a big cuddle for me!0 -
Thanks, zaksmum, and I completely forgot to mention the whole point of the thread!
The vet prescribed Milbemax wormers; I gave them to Henry and Oliver last night, and there's been no throwing up. The tablets are tiny - if I remember rightly, Drontal is a relatively big white tablet that I had to break up, but with Milbemax, I can give them whole. There are two sizes of tablets, though, and we got the smaller ones.
Hope this helps!0 -
Thanks meerkat I'll ask the vet about those - or can I buy them without seeing a vet?0
