If I renew my car tax now, when will it start?

Hi guys,

My car tax is due at the end of the month. I've just received a postal reminder to renew it. I want to do it now, online, so that I don't forget, but am not sure that if I get it now, that it will activate from today, or from the end of the old tax disc? I've tried to find the answers on the website, but can't see them.

It's probably a really daft question, but I will wait til nearer the time if it will start it today as I will lose out on two weeks worth of tax otherwise.

Advice appreciated, please! :)

    :)

Childish I know, but I hate the thought of giving them the benefit of my money for any longer than I absolutely have to! Will you really forget? Set a reminder on your phone for the 29th Nov!

It is better to do it earlier as you have to actually display it from the 1st of the month to comply with the law.

  • To start the following month you must order AFTER the 15th of the previous month ie if you want to start 1st Dec, DO NOT order before 15th November or you will lose a month

I don't think you do now!

My renewal states that there is a new law that as long as the tax disc has been purchased online or by phone in the last few days of the previous month, you will not be committing an offence by not displaying a tax disc during the first 5 days of the following month to allow for the disc to arrive in the post (as long as you applied before current disc or Sorn expired).

They are trying to encourage online payment, so as long as you had already complied, would they penalise you if the post was delayed after the 5 days??

No! My current renewal says do not apply before the 5th day of the month before the tax disc is due to start!

No, inline with the earlier poster, provided you apply using the auto reminder ref, your tax will be consecutive to the elapsing one, ie, it starts when the present one runs out;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

    That's what I've done - phew!

It also says on the back of the reminder that you can not have it on display for up to a fotnight after buying it if you are awaiting arrival by post, so long as you can prove you paid for it if challenged. (To stop people who are still waiting for it to arrive from them from wrongly getting in trouble, I suppose.)

Thanks to all for their advice. :)

As others have said, this is out of date advice and is incorrect.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
