As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread on picking your own onions.

Does anyone have a recipe for some good, strong pickled onions, please, the spicier the better! Ideally I'd like to recreate the Barry Norman ones, I've looked at the list of ingredients but 'spices' is a bit vague!
I have a jar left over from some posh ones I bought in a sale once (I kept the vinegar as it was fantastic!) and those have a bay leaf in and what looks like different coloured peppercorns at the bottom but I'm not sure if that's exactly what they are?Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

Thanks, Tootoo. I googled it at work and and found a thread on this good site (that for some reason I can't find now to link) that leads me to believe that's the way to go.
Maybe somebody in the know could add this thread to that one, please?Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

With the eggs you njust boil them, peel them and shove them in the jar. Fill with pickling vinegar and leave for a few days. It's surprising how quick it happens.
I've never done the onions but my opinion would be that it's just the same. Peel them and chuck them in the jar and fill it up with pickling vinegar. Best to wait until someone who's actually done onions comes along though.0 -
I peel then soak my onions overnight in salty water. Rinse the next day and pack into a jar. Top it up with pickleing vinegar. You can always add a chilli or two if you like your onions to really pack a punch. I leave them 4 - 6 weeks before eatingI am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order

The onions you do just like normal & will keep for ages,Pickled Egg's I have no clue about as I haven't ate one since 1985,when I had one in a glass of Creme De Menth & was violently sick!!0

No need to use pickling vinegar, the value one, 13p a pint, Morrison's is OK, chuck in some spices if you like as suggested by Mrs Veg P
I sometimes use the Sarson's vinegar if I need the jar, otherwise "value", "smart price" is fine
Once pickled they will keep forever, however the texture may change over time, eggs will start to dissolve eventually [year or more maybe?], onions will loose the crunch in similar time
Both will be edible & not poison, but taste, too vinegary, & texture may not be what you would wishEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0
