Well if you have noise on the line then it will almost certainly affect your broadband. Report a line fault (not a broadband fault) to BT and insist that they rectify it with an engineer visit if necessary. You may have to be persistent, and of course they will threaten you with a call out charge, but if you have done all the internal tests then that should not deter you. They are simply trying to avoid getting charged for calling OR out, as they invariably do.
If the line is at fault, then swapping ISP's will make no difference. But that shouldn't deter you from leaving one of the worst and most expensive ISP's around. Distance to the exchange is one factor affecting your speed, nothing to do with the other issues.

thanks for the replies everyone, I totally understand that moving to another is going to mean I have the same speed that's just something I have to accept given where I live. It's the reliability that is more important at this stage as I can handle the slow speed no matter where it comes from so long as it's actually working.

I had to literally argue with a BT rep on the phone last night to get him to agree to send an engineer out but I kept on and ended up telling him to just send the bloody engineer out and if there's a cost I'll worry about that when it happens. He said ok fine. I rang back this morning to check progress to be told oh sorry that hadn't been escalated to engineers. Not good enough at all.

I have totally had it with BT. I'm sick and tired of being pushed pillar to post because their lines or broadband go down, being told there's no noise on my line when there obviously is and them saying it's because of where I live that's the problem. I have repeatedly told them that I KNOW I will have slow speeds I completely understand that and that is fine, that is not BT's fault but it is their fault if the broadband service goes completely down and even worse the entire phone line system goes down.

Sorry for ranting but I have done every self test bt have told me to several times, just seriously had it with this company.

You can log a line fault online (well you could if your broadband was working anyway...)
Did you report a line fault and not a broadband fault?-that's the only way it will get escalated more quickly to OR.

    Hi

I did report the line fault as this time it's not actually the broadband at fault. I'm fed up with it in general because of the issues we've been having with them but this time it's definitely the line and it has been definitely reported as such. It's one thing after another with BT :(
  • Assuming that where you live you don't have the option of broadband from wires belonging to a cable TV company (not your phone wires) then an ADSL (Broadband) connection will come by "BT" wires (the Openreach part of BT).

When you then get ADSL there are two basic options, a supplier who has their own equipment in the exchange (this is called Local Loop Unbundling) and those who don't.

If your problems are essentially line related it won't matter who you get broadband from. If the problems are common to many people using BT broadband then it may be helped by moving to another ISP, particularly someone with equipment in your exchange.

As someone else mentioned, samknows will tell you what your options are but don't get your hopes up !

Buying a better modem/router MIGHT help a bit. One which has a reputation for working well on difficult lines is what you would want but I don't have a recomendation.

thanks so much that's really helpful, I have finally been able to get on the samknows site and these are the options it's given me

The following services are available in your location:

    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    BT FTTC
    O2 / Be LLU
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU

Now it has given me a long list on the other page of other suppliers but I know these wouldn't be the ones with their own equipment at the exchange. I don't fancy talktalk at all so it's looking very like 02 when I finally get a working phone line.

    Thanks again everyone.

Correct, 02 is by far your best choice there. Remember to sign up online via a cashback site to get that and the 3 months free, and if you register an 02 mobile no. there is a further £5pm saving.

    Paddy,

I emailed the details hours ago and didn't even receive an acknowledgement email, can't say that I'm surprised to be honest.
