A cyclist's rant to incompetent road users...

  • Everything I have read on highway law suggests that it is. Looks like I need to read some more!

Edit: Bicycles are, in law, carriages (as a consequence of the Taylor v Goodwin judgment in 1879)

I agree, but if you look at the case in further detail you'll see it was only held to be a carriage under the offence of furious and drunken cycling off the top of my head. Like I said, depends on the law. For example; a bicycle is not a carriage for the purposes of the theft act 1968.

It's a whole other lengthy debate on when a bicycle is and isn't a carriage, similarly when a house is and isn't a dwelling, that's just way law is. It's easy to find stuff to prove a point but putting it into context's where the money is! :)

well seeing that not many tow paths are right next to a road, I'd be amazed if an angler (and I am an angler) is going to leave the rest of his kit, run back (and most anglers are stereotypically averse to running, if you get my drift) to wherever his car was, guess where the cyclist was heading and conviniently meet them at that bridge...... On all the fishing forums I'm on i've never heard of anyone that's actually had rods broken - arguements maybe. But then I might've missed one or two.

TBH I've got such conflicting feelings to this thread. My car's lucky to do 28mpg and I pay a lot of tax on it and I drive relatively sensibly at times. I cycle a fair amount at excessive speeds and agressively towards car owners often at night, wearing black with no lights on, and I fish. I don't know who to complain about!

They were causing an obstruction to the path? Ramblers do the same thing to fences/walls all the time....

No, the towpath is right next to the road for miles, only way off it is up to the bridges that cross over the canal from the road, and he chose a group of fishermen that had parked right next to where they were fishing.
Probably not the brightest thing to do. The fishermen did get done for assault though, I think they all got done for criminal damage.

Are you sure it wasn't for damaging a criminal?

so it's ok to beat someone up and physically threaten them, but not to damage an inanimate tube of carbon?

i blame the labour party personally.....

I've heard this one too.... It's illegal to block a "queens highway", a lot of folk go buying big expensive houses that have such public rights of way through the middle of them, they then proceed to remove the public footpath signs and block the route.....
The Ramblers association descends removes blockages and if further trouble occurs they have them prosecuted.
You might think "oh they're just a bunch of mint cake eating OAPs", but the RA are extremely well off, they have members in high places and they have a massive financial backing.

Not all cyclists are inaminate, but I suppose technically they are tubes of carbon.

if cyclist were inanimate, people wouldn't have a problem with them - apart from when they are inanimate on the bonnet, it obscures the view.

That was actually pretty worrying to watch, having read the video's description before I watched it.

Good to see that the two motorists had rockets fired up their !!!!!!, and that the cyclist is safe.
