    Today I have made SUPERCHEAP trifle using Asda Smartprice:
    fruit cocktail - 22p
    jelly - 12p
    custard - 11p....and some old stale buns I made last week.

    OH does not like cream so we are just doing without, so total cost..................................45p!!! :D

    Not cringing at all! In my childhood, in Italy 40+ years ago we used to have bread, butter AND sugar sandwiches as a treat!

    If you're going more savoury than sweet crisp sandwiches were alway welcome in our house.

    Or the bread straight out of the oven - how we didn't suffer from indigestion I don't know. Oh yes I do - we were young.

    Hot chocolate sandwiches are good - just butter and hot chocolate powder.

    Mum always told us about condensed milk sandwiches but wouldn't make them for us.

    We had the bananas and cream thing every saturday - we were inventive and called it ..... banana cream .... whipped cream mixed with mashed bananas and raisins.

    don't know if this has been added yet but....Baked apples!

    Core a whole apple, fill the hole with sultanas and dessicated coconut and a generous helping of brown sugar/golden syrup (or both!!). Zap in the microwave for 1-2 mins (or until apple soft and sugar melted) and .... YUMMY!!

    Just be careful, REALLY hot when it comes out.

    This used to be a treat which we enjoyed making as much as eating. Haven't had one for years.

  • i am cringing when i hear of sugar sandwiches and sauce sandwiches because it makes me remember a friend whose family was poor and this was part of her staple meals along with salt sandwiches.

    my mum was brought up in the glasgow tenements and when she was wee my gran used to make homemade chips and put them in pokes and throw it down to her and her siblings (9 of them!) in the backyard for a treat. they loved it.

    My mum used to make this too, and I use her recipe:

    Break stale/old bread into small pieces (any bread will do), place in a large bowl and cover with cold water. Soak for at least 2 hours - even overnight if you want. Then drain off the water and squeeze any excess out of the bread and place in a clean bowl. Stir in sultanas, currants, raisins, a teaspoon of mixed spice, a good sprinkling of shredded suet (Atora now do a lower fat version - don't ask me how - which should make it a bit more healthy), sugar and one or two eggs, depending on how much mixture you have made.     Spread the mixture into a well greased roasting tin - the mixture should be a couple of inches thick - sprinkle the top with demerara sugar and bake in a medium oven until firm, about 1 hour should do it. Cool and cut into squares.

  • Great thread guys. Got a few ideas:
    *When making jelly, instead of adding cold water to help it set, try evaporated milk. You will need to keep stirring it whilst its setting, called "fluff", comes out springy.
    *Another idea is crushed digestives but not smooth, mixed with melted cooking chocolate and some butter (Ok a little syrup 2 for all you syrup lovers). Mix it all together, and put it into a baking tray, cool then chill, cut it into squares. My mum used to call this "chocolate crunch.
    *One more which I sometimes make, which is really addictive, toffee cheesecake. Make your base with crushed digestives and butter, allow to harden. Boil a tin of condensed milk, now this is the important bit, the tin is put into the water unopened. Dont let it boil dry. I usually do this for about 1-1 and a half hours. Then cool the tin for a while. Open the can and the condensed milk is like caramel and you can spread it on base. I usually put some whipped cream or some ice-cream with it. Give it a try, you'll love it. x

    Ginger cake and custard. Yum! You just need one of those loaf-shaped ginger cakes you can buy anywhere (Are they by Lyons? The oned in a foil wrapper) and a carton of custard.

    We used to have banana and custard quite often, but apple and custard is also good - just a chopped-up or sliced apple and, er, custard! My mother ws quite into custard, can you tell?

    not really os but a quick easy treat two biscuites spirt squirty cream in the middle job done also at easter we spilt the egg into fill with ice cream and any thing else you have we use the sweets inside the egg and then you have an unusal puding an other thing is sqirt some sqirty cream on top of yougarts sprinkle some hundreds and thousands on them kids love them
