Nanna used to give me these sweet treats:
    apple sandwiches
    bread and jam
slices of Mars bar (we used to share one between 3)

Bread and jam is a fantastic standby treat in our house (hm jam too;) ). My mum used to make it into a pudding for us when we were little by making fried jam sandwiches. You can do them in a sandwich maker but mum just used to make some jam sandwiches and fry them in butter (I think she left the butter out of the inside). She would serve them cut in quarters with whipped cream and a warning 'the jam is HOT !!!'
I had some thin slices of ready made puff pastry lying around (not the most OS) and made samosas and jam puffs in the sandwich maker - came out really well:)

When Mum was young she was a ballerina ,she said one of her favourite lunches was a chocolate sandwich. It was literally a bar of chocolate between 2 slices of bread (bleugh!).
    Nuttella is good too:)

It is the same stuff as Ferrera Roches, minus the hazelnuts on the outside

Golden syrup sandwiches [well it was the 1970s!] and melt butter, syrup and cocoa powder and pour over vanilla icecream.

I suspect that syrup sandwiches, sugar sandwiches & a lot of the other treats mentioned here are no more lethal than some of the chemical concoctions on sale at the moment. It's just that we know what's in them!!!
With some of the things available it's probably best not to know!;)

I'll hold my hands up here and admit that although I haven't had a syrup sarnie in many years I still have a brown sugar one occasionally in times of stress or PMT!! When we were kids in Norfolk we used to have pork dripping with salt on top on toast. It was gorgeous but probably not that fab for the arteries:D
