    Ice cream cake.
Make a base with value digestives or ginger nuts, like a cheesecake base.
EMpty out ahalf a pack of value ice cream into a bowl and leave til its soft enough to put on the base, spread it out so it looks like a cheesecake
Put it in the freezer until you are ready to eat it:)

Mum used to do a "Dougal" cake (magic roundabout dog thing).

anyway. You cut a swiss roll in half long ways. Put the flat side down on a tray or plate. Cover with chocolate angel delight stuff. And then freeze it! Think it was meant to have smarties as eyes and a nose etc but she didn't bother.

Leave out of freezer for a little while before serving.

Yum yum. Takes ages to eat as it's all frozen angel delight. ;)

And we used to have chocolate spread sandwiches. Or plain digestives with chocolate spread on if there were no choccy bics! :)

What a great thread - already got some great ideas for making some sweet treats for my boy. He is constantly looking for treats (does eat fruit as well mind you) and I hate going out and buying funsize choc bars all the time.

My fave as a kid when I was still hungry was a sandwich with syrup and butter (yum) or treacle. Blame my dad - he got me in to both! Still love hot buttered toast with sryup to this day.

Syrup also nice on French Toast :-)

Thriftlady - that sounds delicious! I might give that one a go tonight.

Not really a cheat, but my mother always used to buy a 10p french baguette from the supermarkets at the end of the day (they just throw them all out if no-one's bought them!!) and make it into a chunky bread and butter pudding. Beautiful hearty pudding, really filling and cost her practically nothing!

Cazzdevil - if you happen to have a recipe for this I would love to try and make. Sounds delish!

    home made vienetta type cake.
Make sandwich sponge then on one half spread jam and on other half carefully cover the flat surface with icecream. Put in freezer seperately then take out and sandwich together and leave till icecream is soft enough for you to cut the cake. You dont have to freeze it if eating at once but it can slump a bit.

We used to melt up the leftover bits of cooking choc and spread onto digestive and rich tea biscuits and then sprinkle over hundreds and thousands before the chocolate sets.

  • When doing roast - make up more samll yorksire pudds than you require and fill them with a teaspoon of jam for pudding - yum

baked rice pudding is very cheap (when you have the oven on anyway) just rice, sugar and milk.

how about sago or tapioca - (good for halloween as frogs spawn!)

micorwave sponge puding with custard - you can really vary the flavourings

when my sister was small she came back from school complaining that we never got jam sandwiches for tea like everyone else at school. We lived in a very poor area, and loads of the kids were really skinny, and wore plastic sandals in the winter poor souls. - we always ate well, despite being constantly on the breadline. BTW I'm only 47 so its not that long ago!!!

OH and I love banana and custard and have for a treat!
banana sandwiches - with or without sugar yum - takes me back

My granny used to make us condensed milk sandwiches - haven't had one in years, do they still sell that stuff?
