Depends on your particular router but most have a Traffic Statistics page.

Read Chapter 6 of the user manual - Viewing Router Status and Usage Statistics.

For those with compatible routers, you can also change the firmware on it to alternative, open-source firmwares that often have far greater functionalities. For an example check out https://www.dd-wrt.com. That particular firmware works with many linksys and other brands of router. Open-WRT is another alternative, and there are many more.

You should just, as mentioned above, be careful that you are only monitoring traffic going out the ADSL connection (WAN) and ignoring all LAN traffic including inter-system traffic. Also, if not using the router for statistical gathering but only doing this at a system level, remember to incude other appartus using the ADSL link, such as telephones (SIP/VoIP) or other services operating on your router (e.g FTP server).

  • For those still using dial-up there's a handy little program I used to use called Tick. It logs your internet connect, for example time on line, data throughput, days of the week, and time etc... It can be configured to show separate logs for different dial-up connections on one computer (i.e. if you want to use 2 or more dial-up numbers.) It can also be set to disconnect your connection at a certain time, handy if you have free calls up to 60 mins for example.
  • Just like to say thanks been looking for something like this for a while.
  • I have used netmetre for ages now and its an excellent bit of software i would highly recommend this.
  • For people with one of the Entanet resellers (UKFSN, ADSL24, Vivacity, Freeola, Aquiss, TitanADSL, Xifos, Falconnet) there is EntaTool (which fetches your actual bandwith usage data straight from Enta Billing).
The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.
  • Hello,

I'm wondering which version of this to download.

Since this article was posted there seem to be later versions of this software available - I've just been to the site (via the link in the 1st post) and there is a "1.1.3 (stable)" version - please does anyone know if the older version espresso mentions in the first post here ("1.1.0 (beta)") is better to download than the latest version - I am thinking about whether it has better functionality or is more stable/reliable/tested than the current version?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Regards,

The latest stable version is 1.1.3 as stated on the website. Personally I'm still using version 0.9.9.9 (beta 2) dating from 2004 on several machines with absolutely no problems whatsoever!
