Benefits shake-up: warning for non-working claimants

  • A quick question... I don't understand why people earning under £10'000 get taxed and then get given the money back as working tax credits?
Is this not just a complete waste of time, resources and money. Why not just raise the tax threshold above this. And using PAYE to work out how much tax is due(if any) by tapering, instead of taking and administering.

People can move in and out of work without losing benefits

Thats 1 of the points I just noticed on a BBC website. Cant wait to see how that will work then seeing as if a person goes into tempory employment there could be what, about a month if a job ends before you have the relevent paperwork\p45 from an employer with a final payslip, after the last date you were payed before you have anything to get your benefit back upto the full amount?. Unless you would get the full amount of benefit from the day you inform them?.

Also how would the above point work if your claiming CTB, CTC HB etc?. Are we to expect they have not accounted for the person moving in and out of work to be the person claiming those benefits?. As the being able to move in and out of work without having to reclaim benefits sounds 1 of the better ideas. A shame it might not work due to there being no doubt a change of circumstances meaning having to reclaim the other benefits possably taking several weeks each time.
  • I can see us ending up with factories, just for the unemployed where you work for your benefit, no wages just your JSA HB etc.

They could churn out police batons, shields and teargas, there's sure to be a call for them.

Because they can ensure single people get X, while couples get X plus a little bit, and families with children get X plus a bit more.

It would cost a lot more your way. Sadly.

    Hi all!

Just wanted to draw your attention to the white paper document recently presented by the Secretary of State to Parliament.

Unfortunately I do not have time to thoroughly read the document tonight - a weekend job. However I will be posting thoughts at a later date. The link to the PDF is as follows:

I hope to see a fairer welfare system encouraging a move from generational benefits households whilst protecting those who need the support. Let's see...

  • So you didn't mind taking someone's job in the town you were working in?

Someone more suited as they didn't have as far to travel?

You should ask my ex employer that question - maybe I was the better candidate!
  • Erm I think this has already been covered, and I know all welfare claimants are supposed to be buried eyebrow deep in Tennants Super cans but you know, I think most of us have heard of this?

Thanks though - and I hope whatever WORK you're in don't mind redundant and mildly insulting repetition - if they do, you may find yourself posting here sooner than you think!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Up to £10.5 BILLION in income-related benefits went unclaimed in Britain in 2007-8.
And only one in eight people who receive housing benefit is unemployed
  • I'm thinking of throwing a party in way of celebration.

While you're having a look, f its in there, let me know if it say anything about restrictions on tax credits for those with savings. Thanks

(I've a feeling those with savings won't be able to claim, once tax credits are merged with all the other benefits.)
