    That's a bit alarmist.
You're welcome to trawl through mine. You'll find I have left 13 negs and received none, not even a neutral.
    Can I help?

Well, I said I'd never heard of any.

How many of those were left before your trading partner left their feedback?

It's actually pretty irrelevant because it seems that most people assume they will get a retaliatory.

I can't count the number of times I've seen something along the lines of "I'd like to leave a well deserved neg but don't want to risk a retaliatory".

    BTW, 13 Negs?

You must be very unfortunate in your trading partners. I've yet to leave one (and that's not because of fear of a retaliatory).

Soolin, I think you should read what you've written there and see if it makes any sense to you, because it certainly doesn't make any to me:

If it's blind feedback then how can: " I wouldn't want to risk a neg, so I just wouldn't risk leaving any", apply. The other party won't know if you've left any feedback. That's the whole point.

I tend to explain myself badly so will try again!

If I just wanted to leave a positive I wouldn't bother if feedback was blind because I would not risk leaving a positive without knowing the buyer was also happy and was going to leave me a positive back. There would be no advantage to me in leaving positive feedback in those circumsatnces.

If however I wanted to leave a neg, and had a feeling I might get a neg or a neutral in return then I would probably leave that neg/neutral even if feedback was blind as I would not be happy to let a poor buyer get away without a neg.

As for retaliatory negs, on my various selling accounts I probably have left a total of 15-18 negs or so in the 7 years I've been on ebay which isn't too bad statistically in over 3000 feedback. I do have one retaliatory neg on a minor id and three where buyers have tried to leave a neg and had it withdrawn because they did not respond to the NPB process, so for say 18 left I am only showing 1 in return.

I see what you men now.

It looks as though my impression of the rate of retaliatory negs is somewhat off.

I still think it's true that people assume they'll get one.

After all, you shouldn't be leaving a neg unless your trading partner has behaved unreasonably and an unreasonable person is just the one to leave a knee-jerk, undeserved retaliatory.

Moglex I do completely agree that people tend to expect a neg in return. Every time i have left a neg I have assumed i will get one in return, so am always amazed when I don't.

Most of my negs were for complete non payers, and 1 for a very poor seller. I tend not to leave negs or neutrals unless my bidders don't pay at all, If someone paid late or was unhelpful or some other minor inconvenience I just wouldn't bother leaving feedback at all.

Waiting for your seller to leave feedback first is an aid to communication.

If your seller has left you a pos for payment but something unforeseen has gone wrong with delivery or with the item in the post, it's extremely easy to make a few clicks and leave a neg for non-received or damaged goods if you know you're not going to get a neg in return, particularly if the item was only a couple of quid and you can't be bothered to resolve it with the seller.

Why should a seller take a neg just because a buyer couldn't be bothered to try to resolve a situation that the seller would quite likely have dealt with, through a replacement, etc.? Not leaving feedback for payment gives the buyer pause for thought before they go rushing off to leave a neg (which doens't help anyone) for something whicih could have been sorted with a couple of emails.

I've only ever left one neg, and it was for this guy http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=stuartmandy

And no, his feedback wasn't that bad when I bought :)

Didn't get a neg back either!

This would mean that rogues would be able to build up their feedback with ebooks or suchlike and then fleece their customers knowing that they could get several weeks until any negs appeared simply by not leaving feedback themselves.

I had never thought of that - you have totally changed my mind on the blind feedback process - I previously thought it was a good idea! There are so many people that build their feedback up through ebooks now that if you really want to know a buyer/seller and they have been building their feedback up fast you have to look what they have been buying/selling recently!

Over seven years it's not too bad. All were for non-paying bidders. I used to sell three or four laptops a week and that attracted a few "loose cannons" :)

Yes, of course. I neglected to consider "13 out of how many"
