Breakdown Cover Discussion

I foolishly let my breakdown cover lapse and when the car broke down before Christmas joined Green Flag at the roadside. I agreed to a year's policy as well and now the car has had to be scrapped, I have been told I cannot have a refund as I had already claimed. They won't take into account that I understood it to be two separate payments.
Please learn from my mistake - just pay to be towed to the garage and find a cheaper policy when you get home...or even better don't letyour cover lapse the first place.
Feel like Green Flag have well and truly ripped me off.:(0 -

These AA offers are dubious - I have been pressing on a regular basis for the £50 cash due to me - so now QUIDCO have been validating the transaction for the last 6 months!
The status of the cash back claim very often reverts to 'Declined' then when I query what is happening - the story goes that it is still being validated... TRUST HAS NOW BROKEN DOWN. This is turning out to be very tiresome purchase!
I would not recommend the AA deal or QUIDCO given my experience...0 -
I've been an AA member since 1998 and my AA breakdown cover came up for renewal last month. I had a bill for about £160 for roadside, homestart and relay, which I thought was way too much.
I checked out the RAC online and found they could do me all that, and throw in a hire car for 3 days if my car was being fixed, for £116.
Rang up the AA and eventually got through to their "I'm thinking of leaving the AA" department. I told them about the deal and said I was going to leave unless they could do something similar. After a little wait on hold they came back and matched the RAC deal and did it for £100! RESULT!
It really does pay to haggle and say you're going to leave!0 -
Got GreenFlag renewal last May.
Took out new GreenFlag cover via Quidco. Premium was lower than the renewal and included free personal cover as well as cover for our two cars on the next to top, Recovery Plus option. The cost is £16 per month.
The Quidco cashback, £35, did take a while to arrive. Transaction 28 May 2010, payment 14 December 2010.I am a mortgage broker. My AA cover has been in the £60 range for the past three years, every year they try to increase it though. I have cover related to my car (rather than person) and homestart and relay. They now show it as a discount now rather than a lower price.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. I WAS a member of Green Flag but the only time I asked for help they said "We are not a mobile mechanic service"and refused to come to my aid when my windscreen wipers packed in and it was raining! How am I supposed to drive safely when I can't see?Thanks!0

Have tried many of the breakdown operators over a number of years and generally been happy with most. However recently had the misfortune to have an accident in france and thought I had cover with First Call. They simply told me whilst sitting on the side of the road that they could not help with getting a breakdown truck and left me to it.
Other breakdown insurance may well say the car insurance will pay for the tow truck (with an accident) but at least will organise it and send on the bill to the car insurance.0 -

Similar situation here but this year they won't go near the previous price which is what they offer to new members. AA tried to swindle nearly £170 on a recurring payment plan then instantly reduced it to £85 or so when I phoned to query their fantasy pricing. Still the most expensive option by far.
RAC currently offer £60 cashback via Quidco so policy price of £69 for Roadside, Recovery, At Home, Onward Travel.
RAC have more patrols per member than the AA too.
However, if we can't rely on cashback or shouldn't make purchasing decisions based on it, what's the point of even discussing this? It's a real shame Rpoints went under as I used them for many years without a single declined transaction.0 -
Just phoned to cancel my renewal for basic roadside with AA as we have tesco points and are going to go with RAC. The renewal quote was £58.50 but as soon as I mentioned I wanted to cancel they said they could reduce this to £40 - cheeky gits!
I've been impressed with the AA when I've used them, but I imagine the RAC are just as good and I can save myself some cash too :beer:0 -
