Christmas Markets in Germany

Have been looking into going to one of the Christmas markets in Germany but am quite surprised to see how many cities have them on offer (and they all look nice)!

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks! :santa2:

I have been to the xmas market in Hammel or Hammelin, west germany and it is fantastic, loads of stalls, the gorgeous smells of ginger houses, the steins, baubles, the drinks, everything is so lovely, I have seen them advertised in the newspapers as 2-4 days trips on the coaches, it really is fab xxx

Been to Berlin, there are loads of different markets there and plenty of other things to do as well.
We went in early November so it goes on for a while.

You can go to Luebeck in the N of Germany near the Baltic Sea, there are many different kinds of markets. If you like handicrafts and arts there is one in a former hospice, with frescoes and decorations from the 17th century, other in churches and one traditional in the streets of the town center. The old town is really beautiful, you can visit Thomas Mann's house and many old buildings. In december there is also an exhibition of ice sculptures with a skating rink. Ryanair flies there, so it's really cheap.

Many Germans I've spoken to reckon that Nurnberg is the best. Not been there myself.

I recommend Luebeck too, we were there last year and its better than any of the other Christmas markets I have been to. There are lots of different small markets dotted around the town. Its a beautiful place and that area of Germany is meant to be amongst the friendliest. THere is more than enough to occupy you for a few days, but if you did go and wanted to go slightly further afield, then Hamburg is a train ride away!

Also to get there, you can fly with Ryanair to their local airport which is only a 5 min cab ride away.

We are going to Leizip this year....So hopefully that is as good!

One of the guys I work with really recommended Nuremberg and said it's the best but he's from there so I figured he was biased! :D
