Did you ask DVLA to check if there was any discrepancies with the no of keepers on record?
When I worked there officially it was not something we were allowed to disclose however we were allowed to say either:
1) Send in the logbook with covering letter outlining concerns and it will be looked at - which meant that I could see there was a discrepancy on records (e.g. a change of address for a keeper had put them on record twice), or
2) send in fee paying enquiry - when there was no clear disrepancy on record.
So maybe try ringing again? They are open today til 5pm

It is also possible that a scam was perpetrated on this car, with somebody told they would have to return it, they then applied for a logbook on a different address, then the logbook was changed from one person to anopther to stay ahead of the people trying to get the car back.
Not possible with a Motability car.0 -
If it WAS a Motability car and the garage tax'd it for you - they would have had to send the V5 off to a LVLO, rather than DVLA to swap the Tax Class. So they could be down as an owner.0

Do you know if the car has had a private plate on it before?
When I traded my last one in they re-registered it as Kilty C/O Scumbag Motor Group when they transferred the plate off
Confused as to not recieving a disposal of vehicle notice from DVLA I called them and they had no idea who I was based on my address!0 -

thanks for that, when I phoned the DVLA, I was going off what I was told by the car supermarket
however having now checked the HPI (dated and timed on the day I bought the car
think I'll be phoning both the car supermarket and the DVLA back
to see what they have to say now.
as for the personalised plater query, don't think so, was given a service sheet post dated with the original plate on it
thanks0 -

It is technically possible to apply for a logbook at the local DVLA office, and if Motability don't recieve the letter sent out to confirm that they don't object to the car being registered to a new keeper then the new logbook will be sent out.
Just because Motability retain the logbook doesn't mean a new one can't be applied for, was a common little fraud a few years ago, when the rich bods in Bishops Avenue where out of the country for a month or so during the summer a likely lad (or casual member of staff) would apply for the logbook, then get a new key from the main dealer, it is fairly easy to get hold of chassis numbers these days. especially since they started putting a visible vin on the dashboard.0 -
Does it say "CT" (for "Cherished Transfer") on the V5? If the car had a private plate on it, then I believe that the number of registered keepers may incremented by 2 (one for the change to the PP, and another when it reverts to the original plate).Philip0

just a bit of an update folks
there's no mention of cherished plate etc on the V5 (thanks anyway)
I have phoned Motorpoint several times, the last time I was informed they are listening to tapes, to try and establish if I was told about a) previous owners b) the car being an x motabilty car
this is despite me mentioning I have the HPI provided on the actual day (and time) I collected the car, also the fact that these facts where mentioned during the final sales process when going over the final details, e.g. the reason behind not having the service book and not having a spare key, this part can not be proved, however I assume it to be common practice in there sales process
I phoned the DVLA today, was told by them the HPI checks are not always 100%
I queried this mentioning the fact that the car was only registered new at Feb2009, and that it was an x Motobility car, they also mentioned that Motorpoint don't have to register the car to apply for a tax disc (something Motorpoint said could account for 1 previous owner)
I'm now waiting to hear back from Motorpoint
also looking at contacting the previous owner, as well as requesting the previous owners from the DVLA0 -

It shouldn't - I've bought a 1 owner car before that had a private plate on it before I owned it.0 -

Correct, when the car was handed back, the yellow slip gets filled in to inform dvla that the owner no longer has the car, and keeps it in "limbo" without generating another owner. the dealers just fill in the new keeper bit and hand it in to the post office or in your case the local DVLA centre when they tax it.
TBH the fact they say they are listening to tapes to find out what you were told sounds like they know the number of former keepers.... If it's only one owner, it should say motability on the log book iirc, so if it doesn't it's definately two. Contact the former owner.....0
