This is my first post I have been lurking the site for a while, but thanks to this thread in particular I have decided to make my own cake/puddings/chocs/peppermint creams etc to save on money this xmas, i have done the cake and puds and had a practice on peppermint creams (which was a total disaster) and had a go at chili truffles and some baileys truffles today - both delicious
Just like to say thanks to everyone, I am going to now try and set myself budget for nov shopping challenge and join the £2 savers club etc
If I come up with any ideas I will post them too - thanks
hi & welcome
id love recipes for the truffles too please0 -

Yep. You need to get cosmetic grade colour and fragrance though... they sell those too - about £1.50 each smell/colour if I remember correctly.
Have a look on Ebay for "bath bomb dot biz" they do the goldfish and the plain soap... postage still isn't cheap but as mentioned above it is heavy stuff! Having said that this shop do £6.50 maximum postage for whatever you get in one order... if you see what I mean!Debt free date - June 2008 :T :T :T0 -
The truffles sound lovely. I just had my first attempts at plain truffles and the chocolate has gone all manky.
More recipes welcome!Debt free date - June 2008 :T :T :T0 -
I have found someone on ebay that lives in my town, so have asked if I can do a pick up for it.
Do I take it, I just chop it up and melt it down, add my fragrance and colour and then let it set in a mould?
And will 750g be enough for 5 bars?

That's exactly it - just make sure you don't let it boil. Once it is almost melted in the microwave I just took it out and stirred it gently until it all melted. Go easy on the colour and fragrance - a little goes a long way! Pour into moulds and leave to set.
Top tip - have a small spray bottle with surgical spirit standing by (with appropriate safety precautions etc) so that when you pour the soap, if you get little bubbles on the top you give it a quick squirt and all the bubbles disappear.
Leave to set and turn out. Instructions often say to leave a few hours.... I was impatient and about 1/2 hour was plenty (for small moulds!)
750g will probably be plenty - I made quite a few with my 1st kilo. It really depends on how big/how many you want to make but it is definitely a good starting amount.
Have fun!Debt free date - June 2008 :T :T :T0 -
Another top tip - melt it in a jug with a lip... much easier to pour into moulds.
As I can testify when I started with a bowl!Debt free date - June 2008 :T :T :T0 -
I just found a deep cherry flavour on ebay for soap  I could end up eating them
Thank you so much for the helpits been fantastic :T
If I get clear, I can tint it a wee bit, and put some dried flowers in there or something  Or glitter for the girls :think:Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
The flowers look quite effective too - I did some with rose petals.... probably damn annoying when you come to use the soap though!Debt free date - June 2008 :T :T :T0

Yeah I thought that too :rotfl: Deffo one for the mother in law
Could also do the same with some bath bombs so that when they disolve, you have a bath full of rose petals :jWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0
