Then what was the allowance for £600pa for? Usually an allowance for pension contributions are only for those who need to claim the higher rate tax relief as the pension provider only applies basic rate tax relief.
I'm afraid pleading ignorance doesn't help. Like everything else if you don't understand then employ someone who does.
"employ someone who does".
You are kidding me arn't you ? I am not a self employed business person or millionaire, I can't afford an accountant, we were both minimum wage earners like half the country !0 -
Complain to your MP that you are fed up living in a country where half the money spent has to be routed through the tax system (or printed); then complain that just when it comes time to retire the tax system becomes a whole lot more complicated.

I had been saying to my work (the council) and even asked others if that I thought my tax level was too high. After finding this bite and testing my levels on your checker I found I had an emergency tax code and had since starting my position in 2008! On approx £11,300 I had been charge over £2000 in tax.
This had come about due to being a partner in a business up until 2006 when we sold it, which for some reason had never been properly closed down with Hmrc. I have had to download past tax returns and was asked to send these in. I did this and was then sent them back and asked to fill in employment forms stating how much I had earnt in this time. To help me, they sent me all my employment history during this time and the amount of money and tax I had been charged. I filled these in and sent them back along with the original tax returns only for a month later for them to be returned with different employment returns to fill in. These have been done and again along with the two other forms sent it all back again. I have now been sent letters for each financial year stating amounts I am owed, it adds up to over £3000! Thank you for this tax calculator, the money you have enabled me to reclaim is much needed.0 -
I've just got a rebate of £570, due to my tax code not being adjusted when I lost a regular car user allowance 5 years ago. The process was easy and the guy on Tax Helpline was really helpful - he even told me what to write in my tax recovery claim letter!
I've told my work colleagues and they're all busy checking now..
I never understood tax codes before and never made time to check them properly. Thanks MSE for explaining it so simply and providing the calculator. A real public service - well done!0 -
Hope someone can help with advice. My HMRC account is already in credit to the tune of £1700. I have asked for repayment but not got it, I'm guessing because I am under investigation for year 2005/06.
I have just completed by 2011/12 tax return and was very surprised to see I have overpaid tax by £700. My tax affairs are very straightforward with one employment and minimal interest/dividends, so my Tax code is obviously wrong.
I haven't submitted the return yet, because I am loathe for the £700 to get added to the credit account. I would like it repaid.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can make sure that is repaid?0 -
so my Tax code is obviously wrong.
If you are straightforward PAYE with no benefits in kind etc ...... why would it be wrong? Have previous SA Returns thrown up a similar issue?Does anyone have any advice on how I can make sure that is repaid?
....... only the obvious. That you try to get the investigation settled. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

the tax code is wrong. My question was is it possible for me to get the over payment refunded to me. I don't want it added to the credit I already have0 -
Have just had 5 years of tax adjustments sent to me all saying I will get a rebate, I have only received one cheque though for last years. When I called hmrc to see where the other cheques were they had an automated service that said you only receive 1 cheque for the full amount. Whis is correct? Should I receive more cheques or just the one for 2011/2012? Confused:mad:0
