  • Thank you for your kind advice, let me explain a few things (in answer to the questions, and of course why i've not been back sooner)
I Have mostly only used BT because they were the 1st people I have used and I have, as yet, not had an issue with them, hence I believed they were ok, but obviously I asked for 'advice' because, as i said in my original post, i am 'hoping' to move soon.
So, why havent I been back here sooner but I have post elsewhere?, go read my other thread, I am trying to sort my finanaces before leaving where I currently live, I dont, as of yet, have a new place to go to, which is why i'm looking into things ready for when I do go, when I move it will be very short notice..... my internet is my lifeline, i am an agrophobic and dont leave my house much, for other reasons i cant travel..... I am leaving my ex partner, who i still currently have to share a house with, my dad is very poorly, he has cancer and has been in hospital over 3 months, in which time i've not been able to see him because of my problems with public places.... and other things.... so forgive me if my mind has been elsewhere, there is lots going on, to move close enough to be able to go and see my dad as and when he does come home, I am giving up the roof over my head, 2 of my dogs have to be rehomed, plus i have my own health issues and finances to sort.... so maybe if someone posts for advice and maybe doesnt come back as quick as you'd expect, it is worth maybe thinking there could well be reasons as to why people dont reply as quick as you'd expect....

Fair enough. No need to be defensive, but now you are back here, why not provide the necessary info to enable you to receive the help that you requested, i.e. the samknows data? As explained above, there's no such thing as general advice on which ISP to choose, it is exchange-dependent.

  • Its not a case of being defensive, maybe you need to 'read the tone' of your post ;-)
When it comes to technology it isnt my strong point, I am going through the posts trying to work out what i need to do

Click on the link to samknows, go to the exchange search page, enter the phone no, look at the results under 'LLU Operator Presence' at the bottom r/h corner and post them. Or alternatively just post the name of your exchange and someone can advise.

I have bounced around many different ISP's and have always ended up going back to BT. Yes they are probably the most expensive provider but I have yet to have any downtime or slow speeds from their service.

I'm quite happy to pay a little extra knowing that I'm getting what I pay for. If you go for one of these crazy cheap services chances are they are not going to be great quality.

But at least with the TT's of the world you don't pay much for the bad service. With BT you get bad service and a high price!

Apart from the excellent advice about checking your exchange details I would say avoid ANY ISP doing a customer grab by advertising stupidly low prices, performance on Plusnet used to be great and has now plummeted along with the service - right when they're blanketing the place in wall-to-wall advertising - when the contract's over next year I'm out of there and moving to Be unless I see some improvement over winter, three years will be long enough!

To qualify my earlier posts, things have improved with Plusnet but I did have to use both the forums and the support ticket system together and we got there in the end - after three weeks. As long as your internet is still working but is maybe slow or certain features won't work, if you can get yourself to their forums and be online to login to your own account, then those two resources are 200x better than the phone. And Plusnet's owned by BT anyway :rotfl:

So you know how good or bad BT performs if you've ever had to call them for customer service. I would say if the place where you're going is cabled and you know the address has had cable before, then Virgin - that's (I believe) £15.25 a month for the basic, no phone on top, from their website when I checked today but new deals are on the web and in the press and post all the time, so keep an eye out.

I've never had much problem with BT tbh, I game online alot and my disconnects aren't that bad compared to some of my friends who are on Virgin/Talk/talk. I would avoid talk/talk like the plague tbh, can;t remember hearing any good things about their broadband.

I was with AOL for years with the odd very rare problem. Since AOL became Talk/Talk I don't even have rare problems. Initially there was a problem with the router which was fixed when I phoned the helpline. Now I have 100% connection and a decent download speed even during peak periods, always between 10 and 11 Mb.
    It's someone else's fault.
