Updating phone software ?

I have a Nokia 5800 xpress music with v11.0.009 software & cannot update the software. According to the Nokia website the latest version is v50.0.005 but if I try to get the phone to update it will connect to the nokia site & recieve data then say there is no available update . What am I doing wrong ?

  • Do you have a USB cable for the phone? Try downloading Ovi suite and updating it via this and the cable.

Unfortunately I do not have the usb lead .
  • Did you check the version by entering your product code on the Nokia website? I assume you don't have any USB lead that would fit, e.g. for a camera or something like that? Long shot, but worth a try! Other than that, you could try taking it to an authorised Nokia repair centre, however they may charge for this service.

Yes I did check on the Nokia website. Have checked all the cable I have but unfortunately not. Will have to give the repair centre a call & see how much :(

Looks like you're network has not got around to updating their version of the phones OS that's why you cant see it when you try to upgrade!!.

Their IS a way to get the latest but it's tricky and may void warranty and may mess things up...

You have to chaging the "Product ID" of the mobile from your networks to the default Nokia code, then you can install the latest Nokia firmware for you mobile.

it should only cost a few quid for a mobile shop to do it for you, but you'll need to *BACKUP EVERYTHING* that's currently on the mobile since you'll lose it all when the phone is updated!!!

When i mean ALL i mean EVERYTHING!! it will be a totally clean install so you'll need to reinstall all your apps, numbers, txt's & music

I did it all the time for my Nokia's

  • What I was thinking though was that it may be that it's just not available "over the air." When I had that phone, IIRC the update to version 20 was over 100MB and the only way I could update it was via USB cable. I tried for several days to get it directly to the phone, but without success.

If you just perform the update, you shouldn't lose anything, but it's best to backup just in case. Nokia's don't wipe the phone in order to upgrade the software.

Nokia's *DO* wipe user data if you don't do the upgrades in order.
    i.e.
    if you're on 50.## and there's 2 other upgrades (to 55.## and 100.##)

if you upgrade to 55.## then 100.## your date will be fine.
    But
If you jump direct to 100.## then you'll lose your data.

Also if you try to restore a backup and you've jumped a version then the restore can fail.

    I've done it many times!

Well it's not under warranty, there is nothing on the phone at present.
Is it something that only shops can do or can I do it myself & if so were would I find the default Nokia code ?

    Complete nonsense .
Update depends upon how Nokia or the carrier have pushed the update and and that may depend upon its size .
Product code is the only definition of latest software for your phone its only relevant to product code not model .
First step is to enter your product code found under the battery into the update check that will then inform you of your latest software for your phone .
