E-bay refunding buyer but I've not received the item back!

Not sure if this is in the right section but thought I'd try.

I recently sold a pc on e-bay and stated no returns unless faulty as I knew the pc worked fine so there'd be no issue. The buyer opened a claim saying the pc wasn't as described and didn't work. I received it back, tested it, found it working perfectly well and posted it out again.

There was no communication back from the buyer so I contacted e-bay asking them to investigate and close the case as they had taken £170 from me putting my Paypal account into a negative balance.

To my amazement they refunded the buyer £170 and now say I owe e-bay the money even though they made no effort to ensure the pc was sent back to me or even investigate fully. Their customer services dept even said to me the refund was my choice!

I've been awaiting a reply from e-bay for a week now (72 hours my @rse!) but don't really know what my options are, other then driving to the buyers house to demand my pc back!

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers in advance

  • Once a claim has been found in the buyers favour and they can show that it has been returned to the seller then they will automatically get their refund.
Once you received it back and found that it was working, then you should have kept hold of the PC and disputed the claim and not returned it back to the buyer.

Once a refund has been issued to a buyer, ebay can not reclaim the money from them, and as you no longer have the PC, there is no way for you to prove that it was working.

All you can now do is to contact the buyer and ask them to return the PC or repay you for it, and if they say they will send it back, they can insist that you pay for the postal costs involved.

I DO hope you sent it recorded/tracked?
or you may well find it hasn't arrived and you never see it again.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

  • That's ridiculous, I tried to resolve the situation by testing the pc so both parties are happy and THIS happens! I've got proof of delivery so I can always fight that the pc is with the buyer not with me and if e-bay want a scrap I'm more then happy. Luckily I'd already taken the payment out of my Paypal account so it's only my e-bay balance that's been hit.

Everything was done through their resolution centre and I've got transcripts of the conversations between me and their customer services bod saying the refund is my choice, hopefully that'll hold some weight?
  • "Not sure if this is in the right section but thought I'd try"

Sorry if you're somehow offended or annoyed by me putting this on 2 boards but as it seemed fairly relevant for both, and not everyone reads every board on here I thought I'd best cover as many bases as seemed relevant.

I'm just after some advice, thought this was a good source for it.

    this makes no sense
are you saying your paypal balance is in minus figures or eBay have actually refunded the buyer and not you
  • I received the money into my Paypal account and withdrew it straight away.

When the buyer raised the issue my Paypal account went to -£170 as they put the money in holding so to speak while the issue was being looked into. When e-bay decided in favour of the buyer my Paypal account went to £0 but now my e-bay account says I'm £170 down so need to pay them that to bring things right.

    Hope that makes sense?

    not really
it sounds like eBay have chosen to refund the buyer
if you had 'refunded' thenthe money would have come out of your PP account
if its sitting @ £0 then a refund cant have come out of your account
  • I'm not sure exactly how it works but that's the score at the moment. On the one hand I'm not out of pocket (as I withdrew the payment as soon as it came through so it's sat in my bank account) but on the other I've now got e-bay saying I need to set up a payment method so I can pay them the £170 I owe them. Seems to be that Paypal just shifted the 'debt' to e-bay to chase me instead of them.

End of the day I now have no pc to re-sell and they are chasing me for £170 where as the 'buyer' has a pc they paid nothing for.

    withdrawing from PP means nothing
they will just send debt collectors after you if you 'owe' money
so dont think that changes anythning
Ive never known this scenario but i know eBay have changed things and sometimes refund buyers.
you need to get onto eBay if thats the case and push them to explain why they refunded a buyer with confirmation of the items return
