Mattress lasted 11mths is that reasonable? Should i complain?

I bought a silentnight miracoil mattress roughly 11mths ago from sainsburys. It's got gradually worse and worse it's now at the point where it sinks to the springs in patches when you get in etc and there is one obvious spring which i keep catching my foot on when in bed! Now me and DH are only light at 9&11 stones and it hasn't been abused lol so i wouldn't say we broke it at all.
I haven't got the money to buy a new one and i've always trusted the silentnight brand as the last mattress we had from them lasted 6-7yrs.
Would you complain or just buy a new one? Am i being unreasonable to expect it to last longer?

Even a budget mattress should last you a few years. So without a doubt you should complain, especially as it is still within the full guarantee.

I should however point out that it is far from being uncommon with this brand. So get your replacement, and then when that one does the same then go for a different brand. But next time stay well away from big brand names, and big retailers.

    I second that

The sales of goods act states that a product should have a lifespan that is reasonable. It should be easy to argue that a mattress should last longer than 11 months.
  • Wasn't too sure who to complain too so i have emailed sainsburys detailing the faults. Hopefully they can either sort it out for me or pass my complaint over to silentnight. Thanks for the replies.

Sainsbury have a pretty good customer service team, so will probably refund or replace without too much issue IMHO :)
  • Tim,

Can you please explain distance selling regs to me. I have a mattress purchased and the supplier refuses to refund me the money under DSR until I return the mattress. I understand that the supplier should refund the money before the goods are returned. Is this correct? How do distance selling Regulations work?

Have you looked at the DSR's...I'm intrigued..what's your problem?
  • Yes - I have looked at DRSs...
They state the following yet the retailer does not want to refund my money. They want me to return the item to the factory for "inspection"!!!
They refuse to follow clear guidelines saying they want the mattress delivered back to them first.

    Refunds
The retailer must refund the full amount including the delivery
costs as soon as possible after the consumer cancels, and in
any case within 30 days at the latest. You cannot insist on the
goods being received by you before you make a refund.
    Returning goods
Only if it is covered in the contract and the written information
can you require the consumer to pay for the cost of returning
the ordered goods. If the consumer then fails to return the
goods, or sends them at your expense, you can charge them
the direct cost to you of the return, even if you have already
refunded the consumer’s money. You are not allowed to
make any further charges, such as a restocking charge or an
    administration charge.
If you do not include these details in the required written
information then you cannot charge anything. You can never
require consumers to pay the cost of returning substitute
goods. If the goods are faulty or do not comply with the
contract, you will have to pay for their return whatever the
    circumstances.

One thing to note is that quality is reflected in the price so cheaper will not last as long as more expensive of course; can be applied to anything which you purchase. I.e. a pair of shoes bought for £10 will not last as long as a pair bought for £110. Saying that, as this mattress was bought within a year Sainsburys are obliged to find out if it was faulty at the time you bought it. If it is faulty they are obliged to offer an exhange. I hope they help!

It should be pointed out that pocket sprung mattresses should ideally be used on a divan bed base, or if using a slatted base, make sure the slats are no more than 2" maximum.
