On Ancestry, I typed in the name of my elusive great, great grandfather for a general search.
I have only ever been able to find him on the 1871 census (he was born in 1862) and I've never found him on a Census again, nor found his death record.
He was my "brick wall".
I've not done any genealogy research for about 5 years now (time and money contraints), BUT when I typed in his name on Ancestry it showed that another member has uploaded a photo of his marriage to my great great grandmother! I tried to contact this member but I cannot as I am not a paid up member and they've not logged on in 6 months.
I've never seen a pic of this couple so for this member to have it *may* mean they have some info as to where he disappeared to.
His daughter (my great grandmother) was in a workhouse in the 1901 census which probably explains why she never spoke of her childhood and had no photo's. So sad.
Looks like I'm getting "the bug" again, but I don't have the time for this right now... lol" I would not change you for the world, but I would change the world for you"

If you manage to put me in touch with this Ancestry member, I'd be very grateful. :T

Anyone who wants to try Ancestry relatively cheaply for 6 months can use their Tesco clubcard vouchers:
http://www.tesco.com/clubcard/deals/product.aspx?R=1656
It's £15 if you order by 5th December, then it goes up to £19. I bought this when the offer was Family Tree Maker 2010 so I'll be ordering this for when my 6 months runs out in April. Bear in mind you do need to enter credit card details but I've always found that they're very good at cancelling when you want to(I've been a member on and off for 10 years). The software is linked to the Ancestry records and gives you possible hints when it finds matches. I've found a couple of elusive people this way.
Plus, according to Ancestry's Facebook site, they're also getting the 1911 census next year, so a better value subscription than FindMyPast IMHO.0 -
For anyone who has missed reading about the offer thus far:
Still a few hours left for people to make use of the 3 free WW1 Military Records databases, so why not dip your toe into the fascinating hobby of family history research.butterfly )i(0 -

free access 27 march 2011
We're making Census Day 2011 even more memorable – by letting you use our historical census records, from England, Wales and Scotland, for FREE.
Use our indexes to look back at your ancestors' ages, birthplaces and relationships over a century ago. You can then view the original pages for England and Wales by selecting one of our membership options, or pay-as-you-go.
Do you think the war records will be availale again in this deal?
I have never been able to find my great grandfather who died in WW1 when my grandfather was only a very young boy and all my family on that side are now dead.0 -
This is a marketing taster - census info available on census day. It doesn't appear to allow you to see the original census pages either, and that's what I think's really interesting.
The war records are different - they aren't census data. They were available free around Remembrance Day - maybe they'll do that again this year. If they do, it's well worth having a look for your great grandfather - I found all sorts of war documents really easily - enlisting records / net of kin forms (that got changed when the man married and had a child during the war) / medals records etc. But I'd be surprised if they offer a war record freebie again before November.0
