Thanks for adding that link too, myrtle, I forgot about it. It is a sister site of the Great War Forum I posted above (started by same person).
Good to hear, also, that you have already found some records, well done.butterfly )i(0 -
Thanks very much for this, have just spent an hour or so browsing & saving documents about my great-uncle. I never knew him but it's really interesting to find out a little about his life!0

That's wonderful, ask, and exactly what researching family history can be all about - bringing ancestors/relations we never had opportunity to meet, to 'life' and giving us a sense of understanding better who they were.
For some, using the free access to Military Records this week will just be 'one-off' curiosity, but hopefully for others, it will be the start or continuance of a fascinating hobby.butterfly )i(0 -
I managed to solve a brick wall from the military records in my grandads records there was a copy of a death cert of his illegitimate child on the reverse was a hand written note stinting they were taking money from him to pay for the girls burial

Knocking a chunk out of a brick wall is always good covlass, albeit sometimes can be tinged with sadness over circumstances, but that said, what a great find.
Frereg is indeed another great resource, so well linked, and although not all areas covered, some may find http://www.freecen.org.uk/ helpful to their research too.butterfly )i(0 -
My OH already subscribes to Ancestry and can't find this offer at all. He just told me that bank details are requested and then he received a message saying he wasn't entitled to the offer..... don't know why......anyone else had problems with this??0

I have alway wanted to track my family tree back.
Trouble is the only people with any real informaiton on my family are my parents and because the won't talk about family, my father especially i don't put much effort into it.
Anyone able to help a little.
Basically all I got to start from is my Date of birth, My parents date of birth and marriage date and possibly my Gran on my mother's side date of birth and death.
Maybe if I work my way through it I can work out the date of death of my Grandad on my dad's side but I don;t know his DOB and he was married twice which really muddies the waters.
My father even refuses to look at a photo of him for which I have never got to the bottom of so I guess this drives my want to know where I come from because at the moment all I know is what I have in my home.Me,my wife and my kids. I know thats enough but I would like to know more.:)
Any help/starting points would be greatly appreciated.

The Ancestry site is so badly ordered-I couldn't find my uncle.I know his name, number, dates of birth and death, as well as address etc.But over 4000 records came up in no particular order ! ie not alphabetical, nor are they in order of birth dates. There were even some with different surnames, and many repetitions. I ploughed through over 2000 of them with no luck, until the rest gave no birth dates at all, so I imagine were unlikely.I did find his record on the Commonwealth War graves site, so thank you for the suggestion.0

I have found a grandfather, that was always denied within the family. Have found him aged 3 living with my great great grandparents (he happens to be the son of 2 of my great grandparents! which makes it incest!)
Have found 1 medal record for him but then everything stops, got nothing else on ww1 with him
I know from another family member that he was k.i.a in 1918.....any ideas where else i could look?
Thanks op for what i have managed to find so far!is officially a GLEEK0
