Tesco delivery driver last week did not accept any vouchers (Sainburys off total spend) - he said that this was a new policy.

I asked if this was just the local store policy or a Head Office directive. I was told it was from "Head Office ...because Tesco are losing too much money with coupon abuse." I didnt stop to find out what was meant by 'coupon abuse', as it was probably all those 'Sainsbury's Magazine £8.99 Off Wine' coupons that they accepted from me over the Christmas & New Year period.
It looks like the greedy supermarkets are just getting twitchy about their huge profit margins!!! As I understand it, after reading a book called Shopped (about crafty supermarket tricks), the supermarkets always demand a crippling fee from suppliers/manufacturers (to put their products on their shelves!), that also MORE than adequately covers the cost of promotions eg. BOGOF and vouchers, on the suppliers' own products. So in that instance, the supermarket isn't losing any money at all, just a tiny little dink in their already massive profits!! When it comes to other competitors' vouchers then yes they may well lose out, but surely that was taken account of when they dreamt up the scheme, after all the giant supermarket machine is not daft, and is completely ruthless!

anyone used homeprinted vouchers on the self scan checkouts?

I've used pre printed ones with no problem but have never been brave enough to use pre printed ones and wondered if anyone had been successful.

Can you use paper coupons when doing on-line shopping with Tesco?

If so, how? Do you hand them to the delivery person? And will they take coupons for other stores and/or for goods that you haven't bought?

    Thanks

I was told not by emailing Tesco directly, i tried to pass some on to my driver too, but he was told he couldnt accept any. You could plead ignorance though and try it.

I've used home printed, but learnt the hard way, that you need to print of on 'best' rather than fast draft - which is what I normally do - otherwise the scanner won't read the bar code.

Last night in store I handed over a mix of coupons, some for products I had bought & some I hadn't. One was for £1 off Ocean Spray Cramberry juice, I had bought 2 cartons at 94p each. The cashier proceeded to check the recipet for the purchase price & manually adjusted the coupon value to 94p off! BUT he still put through £1.74 value of coupons for items I hadn't bought without checking & other coupons for items I had bought without checking! Odd, or what?????

I've found Ocean Spray vouchers weird, too. I had one for up to £1.49 off (from the Freebies board some time ago :) ) and got just one carton for 91p, well I only got 91p deducted from the bill, not £1.49.

What I find helpul is the following (posted by someone else on these boards, but can't remember who or when, but cheers for the tip anyway!): on the coupon's barcode, look at the two or three numbers before last (the last one is irrelevant). They tell you what the discount is! E.g. a £1 off coupon's last numbers would be 100X (where X could be any number), or for 50p off it would be 050X. Now the funny Ocean Spray one was 000X so I'm assuming that's why the cashier has to enter the price manually.

I might be wrong but that's what my little brain has come up with :)

Interesting Doormouse.......maybe I was doing the cashier an injustice?!
A clever trick by Ocean Spray which might prevent the coupon being used without a valid purchase? Hope it doesn't catch on!

  • i spent my ocean spray coupons yesterday in tesco, they beeped so she had to put the price in manually, think she was just about to ask me what the price was, i said £1.49 so put in that twice as i had 2 coupons, only because i read on the voucher upto £1.49 but it worked.
