TESCO: Changing Money Off Coupons Policy ?

Just visited my local Tesco at Winchester. Presented vouchers as usual (a mixture of coupons from magazines/newspapers/product wrappers & internet prints) and was told that they would be accepted on this occassion (just as they always had been), but that Tesco were changing their policy to ONLY ACCEPT COUPONS that MATCHED PURCHASED ITEMS !!
I asked if this was just the local store policy or a Head Office directive. I was told it was from "Head Office ...because Tesco are losing too much money with coupon abuse." I didnt stop to find out what was meant by 'coupon abuse', as it was probably all those 'Sainsbury's Magazine £8.99 Off Wine' coupons that they accepted from me over the Christmas & New Year period.
This obviously needs confirming from Tesco Head Office (I feel an email coming on), but it looks like the good times my be ending.... soon.

I think Tesco are getting a bit wise to the whole coupon thing. My local store normally take as many coupons as i can give them but when i went yesterday when i gave them my coupons, the checkout girl told me that the policy has now changed, they can only take one coupon (no multiples of the same coupon), unless you have actually bought the product.
I think its only time before the other supermarkets say the same. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Very very unlikely that this is a head office policy. Much more likely to be a local store getting irritated with piles of vouchers and making their own rules, telling stories about head office policy to quieten an awkward customer.
The closest I've got to an official Tesco policy when the item is not bought is no multiples, less or equal number of vouchers to items bought (so you can't use 30 vouchers when buying a single item), and a cap on value of between 10 and 50% depending on who you talk to. I don't think they are keen on scanned vouchers now, either, or product vouchers produced by other supermarkets (other than the £10 off a £50 spend promotional ones). I've heard this basic framework sufficiently often in different contexts recently to believe it is something approaching official policy.
If anything, I've noticed my local Tesco stores are being more relaxed than they were 6 months ago, and Asda is completely back to normal after a sticky period where only 2 vouchers were accepted per transaction.
As always, if you get a rejection, don't argue the toss, pocket the vouchers and try again next week.0 -
My own Tescos changes it's mind about coupons from one week to the next.
I use mine at Asda, where they'll take as long as they stock product.
My own Asda are particular about looking at coupons expiry date (but from other peoples posts that's not so everywhere).0 -

I think its only time before the other supermarkets say the same.I had about half mine refused the other day saying you have to by the item, but the checkout girl could hardly speak english and the service desk staff were just as useless. I'm waiting for a manager to call me back (but they are useless at that too).

I most certainly do! That was my introduction to coupons - oh the embarrassment of nonscan internet coupons! Thankfully I seemed to have moved on to genuine coupons.
Those internet ones (which I never got to scan successfully) were very character building and made me have to REALLY want to save the £5-8 each time!Nice to save.0 -
My local Tesco have been very good at accepting coupons (I haven't had to resort to internet ones, though, so don't know about them) - I actually find them better than Asda at accepting anything!
Anyway, I was trying it on a bit at Tesco self-scan yesterday (was trying to use multiples and got a bit greedy) and the lady had to come over. She was ever so nice though, explaining the no multiples rule, but did not say a thing about a new policy, just told me to come and use my coupons another day! (I just split my shop into two instead

So what's changed? My Tesco still obliges-even with internet coupons. I suppose the abuses with Homesolutions vouchers has been curtailed- well it couldn't last could it? There are still lots about and we are communicating better on this wizzy board! So heads up Moneysavers.!"£$%^&*()0

I put this question to Tesco Head Office and last month and they said that it is individual store policy. Tesco at Southend have changed their policy to accept one voucher per shop (if you haven't bought any of the products) but no minimum spend. However I have been quite happily using all my vouchers at other Tesco stores in the area.0
