Mayflower10cat wrote: »For our wedding present, she brought all the way back from Mexico, a huge cardboard box full of newspaper wrapped packages. She was obviously very pleased with herself and couldn't wait for us to open them. They're the real thing, she kept saying, not just made for the tourists! Fortunately for us, my MiL had already been shown the contents by excited daughter and whispered to me - "I don't know why she chose these, I really don't, I apologise for my daughter..." With some trepidation, we started unwrapping the various heavy objects, to reveal seven, large, carved, painted wooden masks. One a red devil with horns, one was a cross eyed rabbit, one was a sort of skull-like wraith, there was a sort of evil baby face, and the rest were vaguely animal-like but nothing I could recognise. All were painted in lurid, crude colours and they even had a faintly unpleasant odour. I suppose there might be some people in the world who would recognise their authentic ethnic artistry, but we certainly couldn't. Sinister and peculiarly frightening summed them up. How on earth she'd got them through customs I'll never know.

I have read this whole thread this afternoon and laughed myself silly. I promise as a MIL that I will now only give gift vouchers as presents.:rotfl:
My long departed MIL used to buy Christmas and birthday gifts and give them in the C&A or Littlewoods bags with the receipt then wrapped in brown paper and string.( She would have loved Primark )None were ever wearable. My SIL used to recycle all the gifts she got from her 2 SILs but I had noone to give them too so off they went to a jumble sale. Was I glad when they eventually ( after about 25 years of this ) agreed to stop presents for grownups and just do gifts for the kids.
All I want or need for birthday and Christmas is a picture of the grandchildren or a bit of their art work from school.:D0 -
My uncle always gives us the strangest presents ever but one year he out did himself, I got a pack of paper serviettes, like you'd buy for a buffet and some plastic disposable aprons (he thought I could use them for decorating!). My brother was given £40 cash, needless to say I now know who his favourite is lol.0

at least some of the things you recieved were useful! I want to put myself forward for the best worst present ever............
A book of how to make clothes for Fairies! I kid you not!
What do you say to that! It wasnt even how to make fairy costumes. Just actual designs, sketches and details on how to design clothes and fashion for fairies!
Then in 2nd place I would put the Milking stall brought for me by my ex. I dont have any cows, or goats, and I dont live on a farm!!!!!Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.0 -

Now, I'd quite like that.:D Was it a latch hook one? They cost about £40, you know.
I once had a cross stitch kit from my Aunt. Great, love cross stitch and the design was nice. When I opened it up though, it was partly stitched. And not very neatly stitched either. It was obviously from a charity shop. Not that I mind too much. At least the thought was there. Now she just gets me horrible cheap wine and wine glasses from Wilkinsons which are a bit tricky to cart the 150 miles back home on the train without breaking them. Sometimes vouchers are acceptable...;)Cross Stitch Cafe Monthly Challenge Member #27

My brother gave me an engraved lighter and a Jack Daniels keyring. I do not and have never smoked, and the only Jack Daniels lover I know is him.
Still, this year for my birthday I asked for a Toblerone from my mother. She gave me an overflowing bag with chocolate products I don't like, and not a Toblerone to be seen.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76
